recently started having my pictures and other items not working in my emails, after selecting options then show remote content I get blank boxes with a broken icon top left hand side. I examined my Add-ons and found I have two versions of Shockwave v 32.0 r0 which is set to Always Activate and v21.0 r0 which is set to Ask to Activate. I want to get rid of the v21.0, so I set to Never Activate. After refreshing both version were set to Never Activate? so I set the v32.0 again to Always Activate, on refreshing v21.0 is altered to Ask to Activate? So I went to the system and removed Adobe Flash Player. checked with both Firefox and Thunderbird, and Shockwave was indeed removed (both versions in Thunderbird) So I downloaded the latest version and installed it, working fine in Firefox. Thunderbird has reinstalled both version again, v32 set to Always Active and v21 Ask to Activate. How can i get rid of v21 completely. And get my remote content being shown properly.

Thanks in advance

Steve

It's unlikely that the status of Shockwave is causing remote content to not be visible. Do you have View/Message Body as set to Original HTML? Are the images visible if you access the account through webmail?

Hi sfhowes,

                   Thanks for you help.

View/Message Body is set to Original HTML. I do not have a web mail account.

Who is the mail provider? Practically all of them offer a way to use the account via a webmail portal. The point is, to see if the images are blocked by the provider on the server before the messages are downloaded to TB.

I'm with Virgin media, but I have never used them to look at my emails. Ok will investigate with VM to see how I do that. Then I will come back here and let you know.

Thanks

Ok this has been difficult, I spoke to virgin media and they put me through to their email help technician. (in India - I think) anyway - I told him about my emails not showing pictures, in Thunderbird. Yes I did find my emails on their web server all 695, going back months. Thunderbird was set up to download emails and the Leave messages on server box is not ticked, so I assume they will be deleted from the server once I've downloaded them, or so I thought. He was unhelpful in answering why they were still on the web server? I found an email that was supposed to show pictures of clothing that my wife wanted to view, the version in Thunderbird using the options box to show remote content, failed no pictures. The same email on the web server also failed to show the pictures. some emails have a - view this in your browser option, and using that shows the pictures, something is wrong, or not set up correctly. Any further help would be great Thanks Steve

If the account is IMAP in TB, mail is stored on the server until deleted there or it's deleted in TB. POP accounts normally delete from the server after download unless set to leave on the server.

Since the images are blocked even when viewed by webmail, you will have to look for some way to unblock them at the provider's end. There may be a global setting for remote images or some way of whitelisting senders, possibly by adding them to the webmail address book.

Hi, I do not use IMAP either on Thunderbird or the Mail server, It has always been Pop accounts. This problem has not always been happening to my emails. I always got my pictures (embedded pictures). So Its Virgin Media's problem. Ok will dig deeper.

I will post what I find, so as to help others.

Will this thread stay open until I do?

Yes, this thread will remain open for at least some months.

Once you get the issue fixed on VM webmail, it should return to normal with TB.

Ok.... this has been one of those things that makes you want to tear your hair out....Not Bald yet!!!! I finally found the culprit - ADguard. By stopping it from running my Web emails (Pics) were all visible, and the follow on effect to Thunderbird is that within the email OPTIONS box - Show remote content - all now works as it should. I am at the present trying to elicit from ADguard the correct settings so as to not Piss off Firefox and Thunderbird into refusing to show me Pics etc. If anyone has this knowledge please impart this on here. If not I will once ADgurard have emailed me back....still waiting....

Thanks all for your help.
