What settings will prevent Firefox from keeping tabs open when I leave a page?

When surfing the web, I find that Firefox doesn't close a tab when I leave a page..and will end up with multiple open tabs which seems to slow the browser and/or the current page that I'm on. I can't find a setting that will change the way that Firefox addresses this.
