User accounts/switching

more options

The only thing holding me back from switching to Firefox from Chrome is the poor user switching that requires using commands on a PC or Mac. I switch back and forth between platforms and love that Firefox is a consistent experience on PC and Mac but the current user switching functionality is half-baked. Please build this functionality into the main browser UI and you will see a large number of users convert over from Chrome!

Sincerely, Brett Brack

What do you mean with 'user switching' ?

Is this about switching a user account on your operating system (Mac/Windows) or about switching between Firefox profile folders?

Are you using/sharing a profile between these operating systems?

Hi Brett, I'm not sure what you mean by "using commands." Since Firefox 47, Firefox has an internal Profile Manager page. It's still not like Chrome's -- you can't access it directly from the toolbar and Firefox doesn't automatically creates a desktop shortcut for each profile -- but you can bookmark the profile manager to make access a little easier.

In case you haven't tested it again recently, why not give it a shot:

(1) Open the Profile Manager page

Type or paste about:profiles in the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it. I suggest bookmarking this page for future reference.

(2) Create a new profile (first-time setup only; skip in the future)

Click the Create a New Profile button, then click Next. Assign a name like Brett2, ignore the option to relocate the profile folder, and click the Finish button.

(3) Launch the new profile in a separate instance of Firefox

Scroll down to the new Brett2 profile and click the Launch profile in new browser button. After a few moments, a new window with the default settings should appear.

Tip: To make it easier to distinguish from your regular profile, you could switch to the dark theme or add a custom theme. See: Built-in themes in Firefox - alternative to complete themes.

(4) After finishing your business in the Brett2 profile, you can exit out of that Firefox without affecting the Firefox window(s) in the other profile where you started.

What do you think?

I can't find where my previous account is. It has bookmarks and other things I'd like to get back the easy way. How might I find it? Thanks.

Hi rreed424, could you post a new question and include your system / version information. This link will get you started. If a link looks interesting along the way, use right-click > Open Link in New Tab to check it so you don't lose your place in the form:
