Cannot login to Thunderbird while traveling to get my gmail.
Whenever I travel away from my home network I am unable to login to Thunderbird to get my gmail. I am constantly prompted to enter my password and that never works. Allowing less secure apps in gmail does not help.

If you are using gmail you might want to use IMAP and oAuth2.0...
You might also want to be looking at the Google security pages. I assume they are blocking your access for some reason. Like you are not were they think you should be. It might even help to log into gmail using a browser to establish the fact you are where Thunderbird is.

Thanks Matt, I will give that a try. Where to I change the settings to IMAP and oAuth2.0?
If you currently have a pop mail account, then you would need to create a new existing mail account and set it up as imap. You cannot simply alter a current pop mail accounts server settings to swap to imap.
If you already have an imap mail account, you can change the Authentication method used in Account Settings > Server Settings. Right click on imap mail account in Folder pane and select 'Settings' Select 'Server settings' for imap mail account. change 'Authentication Method' to OAuth2
then change the settings for the 'Outgoing server (SMTP). In left pane near the bottom select 'Outgoing Server (SMTP)' select the imap gmail outgoing server in list click on 'Edit' change 'Authentication Method' to OAuth2 click on 'OK' Click on 'OK'
Exit and restart Thunderbird Gmail will direct you to logon to confirm you are you. Logon using normal password. An AOuth2 token will get set in thunderbird. In future it will be used to access server.
