I cannot say when it really happened - but recently there was a Firefox and gmail update which also very much slowed down my gmail. today I saw that my Thunderbird button on the desktop was empty - when I wanted to activate it there is a pop up telling me that the link has changed. But I cannot find the Thunderbird anywhere in the folders. This is a desaster as it contains the emails since 12 years. Everything was stored in local folders - where is it gone to? Please do not use abbreviations - I am no PC freak. Thanks in advance

Has your Windows operating system had an update or used a 'restore' function?

Do you see a 'windows.old' folder on the desktop ?

Is 'Mozilla Thunderbird' program in either of the two locations: On 64-bit Windows OS:

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe

On 32-bit Windows OS:

  • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe

Make hidden files and folders visible:

Locate this:

  • C:\Users\<Windows user name>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\<Profile name>\

Do you see a Thunderbird folder in the 'Roaming' folder ? Does it contain a 'Profiles' folder with a 'profile name' folder in it?

Thank you for your reply but I cannot solve the problem with this. My surface is running with windows 10 - the functions to show hidden folders must be different. I found Mozilla thunderbird folder in :\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird but no thunderbird exe. it is very strange all folders in the Thunderbird folder are quite new from 30.08.2018 and the last one 20.09.2018 which is called to be deleted! I installed mozilla thunderbird in june 2016 - so this must be something different. I had a lot of updates in the last time - and I do not know if there was one called windows restore? There is no windows old folder on my desktop. best regards

thank you - yes now I could find these options - but they were already clicked - so I could see all hidden files.

If \Program Files (x86)\'Mozilla Thunderbird' folder does not contain 'thunderbird.exe' then TB cannot run. This would explain why your shortcut icon does not work.

There is an image below which shows the contents of my \Program Files\'Mozilla Thunderbird' folder, so you can see what should be there.

If 'thunderbird.exe' is missing then something has removed it. This is very unusual.

If Windows OS does a major update or uses a restore it is known to delete all applications that do not automatically come installed with OS. But usually the 'Mozilla Thunderbird' folder is entirely gone and any folders located under 'Roaming' etc are put into a 'windows.old' folder which is usually available for about a month before Windows auto deletes it.

If you have an anti-Virus product running and have it set to auto fix a problem, it can delete anything. I would not allow any Anti-Virus to perform an auto fix without asking you first. Never let it fix anything to do with Thunderbird as it will probably cause more problems.

Suggest: Generally, if Thunderbird was running then you should exit first - but in your case it is already not running.

Access: \Program Files (x86)\'Mozilla Thunderbird' Right click on 'Mozilla Thunderbird' folder and select 'Delete' This will uninstall Thunderbird program.

Then download a fresh version and install. If you want to use the latest version which is 60 then use this link:

choose your prefered language and the Windows download.

Some people are still using version 52.9.1 . But it will not auto update to 60 at the moment. They are waiting to be sure there are no gremlins in the latest release. If you want version 52.9.1 for Windows OS then this is the link:

then choose prefered language eg: en-GB is English British click on the 'Thunderbird Setup 52.9.1.exe' to download.
