My bookmarks reverted to a very old list.

more options

This is very weird. I lost a lot of my bookmarks, including folders I made a while ago. It looks like it reverted to a list of bookmarks from a long time ago. Al the bookmarks now have the same little globe picture instead of the normal ones representing the individual pages, like a red triangle for my YouTube Music links . I tried to restore them via Firefox itself. This failed. I tried Mozbackup, this failed. I uninstalled Firefox, restarted my computer and reinstalled. The wrong old bookmarks automatically appeared again and recovering still did not work.

I still have a relatively recent list that I exported to Chrome. I could import them back in and can probably manually restore most by shifting folders and individual bookmarks around. In that case I would 'only' have lost a few weeks. Very annoying.

I would like to know what happened, how to prevent this from happening again and a possible fix

Hello,

Firefox automatically creates backups of your bookmarks, which can be helpful if your bookmarks are lost or missing. To recover them, follow the instructions below.

  1. Use one of these methods to open the Bookmarks Library window:
    • Firefox 29 and above: Click the Bookmarks button Bookmarks-29 and select Show All Bookmarks.
    • Previous Firefox versions: Click the Firefox button and click on Bookmarks. (If you don't have a Firefox button, click the Bookmarks button Bookmarks button win 2 or Bookmarks menu item and select Show All Bookmarks.)
  2. At the top of the Library window, click on Import and Backup and select Restore.
  3. Click the date of the bookmark backup you want to recover.
  4. In the new window that appears, click OK.
  5. Your bookmarks from the selected date should now be restored.

For more information, see the Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer article. For other solutions, see the Recover lost or missing Bookmarks article.

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

Thank you.

The current Firefox release uses favicons.sqlite to store the favicons. You can lose the favicons in case Firefox finds a problem with places.sqlite and creates a new database file to store bookmarks and history. In such a case you lose the favicons and you need to use a bookmark to make Firefox fetch the favicon from the server.

@ FFus3r That is the first thing I did, didn't work unfortunately.

@cor-el Can you elaborate on how I can do this: "In such a case you lose the favicons and you need to use a bookmark to make Firefox fetch the favicon from the server."?

Thanks both for the answers.

Did Firefox really restored an old(er) set of bookmarks?

What backups are listed in the Bookmarks Manager (Library)? What is the most recent backup?

  • Bookmarks -> Show All Bookmarks -> Import & Backup -> Restore

Do you possibly have multiple profiles? You can check as follows:

Inside Firefox, type or paste about:profiles in the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it.

This page should list the profiles known to Firefox from a settings file named Profiles.ini -- it is not necessarily a complete catalog of all profiles on disk.

Is there another profile here that could be more current? You can scroll down to it and click the Set as default profile button below that profile, then scroll back up and click the Restart normally button. (There are some other buttons, but please ignore them.)

Firefox should exit and then start up using the selected profile.

If that isn't an improvement, open the about:profiles page again, click the Set as default profile button for a different profile, then click the Restart normally button to get back to it.

Also... if you restored using MozBackup, where did that backup end up? Hmm...

Here's how to check whether there are additional profile folders in the standard location (i.e., under your current Windows user) in addition to the ones you can see in about:profiles.

Start by opening your current Firefox profile folder using either:

* "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help > Troubleshooting Information
* (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
* type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the first table on the page, click the "Open Folder" button, to launch a new window listing various files and folders in Windows Explorer.

In the Windows Explorer address bar, click the capitalized word Profiles to move up one level in the folder hierarchy.

Any additional profile folders not in the about:profiles list?

I checked and I have one profile.

These are my bookmark files:

I don't know why there is a huge gap between 2013 and 2018, I only looked at this after I noticed the problem. I tried restoring to the 9 and 11 September ones and that did not help. The 13 September is after I imported the set I exported to Chrome back in. My phone has the same wrong old set.

There is only one profile folder. When looking at it one thing did stand out, the old 2013 files are Json, the newer ones JsonLZ4, whatever that means.

This is all very weird.

LZ4 is a type of compression, and .jsonlz4 is Mozilla's file name indicating it's a JSON file that was compressed using LZ4 compression.

The gap between 2013 and 2018 is baffling. It seems Firefox somehow started using a five year old profile, otherwise those old files would have been replaced by newer ones a long time ago.

Does your MozBackup backup have any newer content in its bookmarkbackups folder? I don't know how that program works, so I don't know the best way to determine that.
