i have been running firefox for quite some time, with very infrequent issues. but as of last night, it will not let me download anything.

like i said, it won't let me download anything. virus/malware scans come up clean, i don't get any 'error messages' when i attempt a download, and i haven't done anything on my end that would suddenly make firefox misbehave. the 'about firefox' option (under the help tab) says it's up to date. i clear my cache regularly, i use CCleaner for the rest, what am i missing? it's not a 'firewall' issue (i have internet explorer on the same PC, it downloads properly) - am i missing something??

thank you to everyone who provided suggestions, direction, et cetera... process of elimination (and several 'trials') revealed that a website i visit has issues with my ad-blocker add-on (i can disable it for that particular website, that's no biggie)...

Hello,

The Refresh feature (called "Reset" in older Firefox versions) can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your bookmarks, history, passwords, cookies, and other essential information.

Note: When you use this feature, you will lose any extensions, toolbar customizations, and some preferences. See the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article for more information.

To Refresh Firefox:

  1. Open the Troubleshooting Information page using one of these methods:
    • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click help Help-29 and select Troubleshooting Information. A new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.
    • If you're unable to access the Help menu, type about:support in your address bar to bring up the Troubleshooting Information page.
  2. At the top right corner of the page, you should see a button that says "Refresh Firefox" ("Reset Firefox" in older Firefox versions). Click on it.
  3. Firefox will close. After the refresh process is completed, Firefox will show a window with the information that is imported.
  4. Click Finish and Firefox will reopen.

i tried the 'refresh' feature last night (yes, i did some digging on my own - disabling software here and there, performing 'trials' regularly), but the problem is still there. it's almost as if firefox is saying "what? you want to download something? not a chance, and we're not gonna tell you why, either."

Have you installed any download helpers or video downloaders ? If so please disable them. Can you download with any other browser installed like Internet Explorer ? If so download something from below. If not talk to a friend/neighbour to grab you some of the list to USB.

firefox let me download the 'superantispyware' program mentioned in one of the articles, and just for giggles, i downloaded 'AVG Free Antivirus' as well ... the SAS program found a bunch of tracking cookies, but nothing sinister; the AVG program found some tracking/security issues, but it wouldn't fix them unless it was the 'alpha dog' in the pack (might be uninstalling it, if it won't play nice with everything else)... the 'malwarebytes' program is already on my PC, i run it about every 2 weeks (updating as needed), and Microsoft Security Essentials gets run oftener than that (updated as needed as well)... it seems like firefox only has a problem with one or two websites in particular, maybe it's trying to tell me something...

i just started it with the 'safe mode', visited the site it had issues with earlier, and selected a file to download - and it worked! (i don't want to identify the website in question, that's a little TOO personal - enough said?)... not sure what the difference would be between 'safe mode' and normal operations, but i saw something on the 'about:support' page about it (might have to go do some reading!)
