Thunderbird can't collect email and gives the error message "sendHTTPRequest error – TypeError: myLoginManager is undefined"

Yesterday my Thunderbird stopped collecting email from any of my accounts. (They were working before.) On startup, Thunderbird gives the error message above. When it tries to connect to a mail server it gets as far as 'Checking mail server capabilities ...’ but gets no further. When I shut it down, it crashes (I have sent the crash report to Mozilla). I am running version 52.9.1 (64bit) on Linux Mint 19.

I assumed that an update had caused the problem, so I reverted to an earlier system state using Mint's 'Timeshift'. I also uninstalled and reinstalled Thunderbird. Neither of these things helped. I also tried setting up a new email account to see what it would do. Thunderbird connected, but didn't ask for a password so, again, it couldn't collect any mail.

I can't find any reference to this error message in a Google search but I presume it's something to do with the code that manages logins?

Soluzione scelta

I have overcome this problem by wiping everything in my configuration, including deleting the hidden .thunderbird directory in my home directory (this is Linux, not Windows). Then I re-entered all the configuration settings. I will have to download all my email again too. The new configuration settings are exactly the same as the old ones, but I suppose something in the .thunderbird directory was causing a problem. I will mark this as 'solved' but it won't be much help to anyone else with the same error message. I never did find out what "sendHTTPRequest error – TypeError: myLoginManager is undefined" meant so i can't say that i truly found a solution.

Are you using the vanilla Thunderbird version from mozilla.com or the one provided by your distribution? In the latter case you should ask in a forum for your distribution.

Good point. Thank you. I have downloaded the latest Thunderbird from https://www.thunderbird.net/ but the problem is exactly the same.

Can you post a screenshot of the error? https://support.mozilla.org/kb/how-do-i-create-screenshot-my-problem

Also, please try to start Thunderbird in safe mode. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/safe-mode-thunderbird

I have attached a screenshot of what pops up when I start Thunderbird normally. If I start it in safe mode I don't get the pop-up warning but it still doesn't collect any email. The status bar just says "Checking mail server capabilities ..." forever. Thanks very much for your interest.

If I start it in safe mode I don't get the pop-up warning

Then most likely the error is caused by an add-on. Check your installed add-ons.

it still doesn't collect any email.

This is a separate problem. See https://support.mozilla.org/kb/cannot-receive-messages

Thank you. i have looked at the article but i don't think the problem with collecting email is separate from the error message. i think that my Thunderbird has lost the ability to authenticate for some reason. I have worked round this problem by installing Evolution, with the same settings as Thunderbird, and have no (technical) problems with that although i prefer Thunderbird.

perhaps you can leave the server names in so we can actually check some of the settings. Sorry but removing that non personal information is like asking the doctor for a cure and refusing to talk about your symptoms.

Sorry, i think we may be straying from the point. I have no difficulty in principle collecting email from the servers. Thunderbird had been doing it for years, Evolution and other clients can still do it. What happened was that I started getting the error message in the headline to this post. Does anyone know what that means?

Another clue: I have just realised that when i start Thunderbird it doesn't ask whether i want to go online or not.
