Probably your antivirus getting in the way. If you start your computer in Safe mode with network support does it run better? If so it is something outside Thunderbird.

Is this a laptop. Some laptops are like this when using the WiFi connection. What we are trying to accomplish is to shut off your antivirus and see if it is scanning where it should not be and stopping everything. https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Antivirus_Related_Performance_Issues
