how to change URL entry for new tabs (specifically, have it empty)
With 60.0.2, when I open a new tab the URL is entered as `about:newtab`. I have to delete this before I start typing or pasting the URL I actually want to go to. I would much prefer the URL to be blank so I could immediately start typing or pasting. Where is the setting to change this?
I have tried the following:
- "When Firefox starts.... show a blank page" - "Home Page.....<empty>" (In light grey it says Mozilla Firefox Start Page)
I also get the following error message: "Firefox can’t find the file at about:newtab." This may be related, but presumably wouldn't be an issue if I could set it up how I wanted, i.e. so that Firefox didn't even try to load about:newtab"
Edit: the setting `browser.newtab.url` doesn't exist in my about:config, so the suggestion in this 2012 thread unfortunately doesn't solve my problem. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/930332

Hi, it should be about:blank
Hi craq, any threads from before Firefox 57 probably won't be helpful.
The built-in new tab page is named about:newtab and it should always be accessible. When it displays, the address bar should be blank (just some italicized placeholder text hinting what you can do). So something's definitely wrong.
Do you have any other extensions? Could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? In its Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.
If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. (On Mac, hold down the option/alt key instead of the Shift key.)
If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:
- "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
- (menu bar) Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
and OK the restart.
Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).
Any improvement?
Thanks for your suggestions. Unfortunately I ran an OS update which had some errors and now I can't boot that machine any more. That means I can't test your ideas. For the record, my add-ons were ghostery and adblock plus. Nothing too exotic, so I don't think they would be a problem.
The problem isn't really solved, what's the best way to close this thread?
