history, bookmarks and browsing sessions are gone

I'm using windows 7 with Firefox Quantum 57.0.4 (32-bit) portable

Today i was asked to update my firefox, so i closed it, then went to my firefox portable folder, selected all it's content and backed it up to another folder. But when i launched it again, absolutely everything was gone. Idem for the backup i had made. I had quite a lot of open tabs there, more than 300.

In the profiles folder, i see no previous sessions file, and the places.sqlite file, although it's time-stamped from today before the crash, is 5 mb instead of 15 mb for a saved older copy from 2 months ago.

Did i lose everything?

Hi, unfortunately I would think you did.

Is there a folder on the Desktop called OldFirefoxProfile ? If is can recover something.

I gather you have looked in the Profile folder and there was not a new Profile made so that you now have 2 ? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-firefox-stores-user-data

I don't have anything on my desktop.

How is this crazy event even possible? All i did was manually backup the whole folder, and i lost absolutely everything.

Hi, truly I have no idea. You are not alone in losing stuff but strange that it would not copy everything when manually backed up.

Myself, I have my bookmarks from 95 and I do this : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/export-firefox-bookmarks-to-backup-or-transfer Is the above what you did to backup ?

Forgot to ask did you save them as HTML or Json ? I have noticed there is more corruption in a json file than issues with HTML myself.
