Hello;

Having uninstalled Firefox 52.4, I'm trying to do a clean install of Firefox 58.02, freshly downloaded from firefox.com

The install procedure is succesfull and then I 'Refresh firefox'

However when I click the Menu Button at the top right, the menu renders as a black box and the menu bar reads Mozilla Firefox (Not Responding). It then appears to return to normal, but the black menu then returns on its own and then it repeats this loop, until eventually the Windows your application is not responding shows up.

Any ideas on how to fix this? Are there logs on disk I can look at? we'd stick with 52.4 but my client needs some specific plugin that's only available on >FF57

hi,

what linux is it and what desktop environment KDE? Gnome? Not really sure but try this,

  1. uninstall firefox
  2. rename firefox profile folder from ~/.mozilla/firefox to ~/.mozilla/firefox.bak
  3. install firefox again

And then see if it helps.

You shouldn't need a client to install FF. So did you install it on Admin account or what account are you installing it from? When you uninstalled the previous FF did you delete the Mozilla folder as well? Also is it 32or64bit O/S your using? Because the FF should correspond to the same O/S bit version as well.

Hello, by client I just meant a person I'm helping.

I'm installing it on an admin account on a Dell Optiplex 5050, remoted in via Teamviewer. I ensured I had the 64 bit version, turned off Windows Defender and Deep Freeze, checked that the "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox" folder was gone and emptied "C:\Windows\Temp" but the same problem obtains.

I saw the menu draw briefly this time - but it came up translucent, then froze and disappeared as though the menu drawing animation was interrupted. Now it is back to only showing a black rectangle in place of the menu, and freezing.

Round two, I went back with the intention of starting Firefox 58.02 in safe mode. The menu button was no longer crashing the browser outright but it seemed extremely slow, *regardless of whether it was started in safe mode or not.*

I asked my client whether any Windows updates had been performed in the interim, and he said no. Then he did all the updates and now FF 58.02 works fine on one of the four machines and is still very slow on the other three. Very strange.
