This page works fine on pre FF57, works on IE, but not on FF57.

Confirmed. Firefox 54 no problem. v57 does not display gif.

Make sure you are not blocking content.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

Yes. The problem is still there. Just tested in Safe Mode as you suggested. Works on IE not FF57. That page is a bit old but still IE brings it up ok.

I called for more help.

In Nightly (59) it works for me all the time. In Beta/DE (58) I can make it work after one or more refreshes. With Firefox 57 I'm having a lot of problems with showing the images and in some profiles it works after refreshing a lot of times.

It looks to me that the JavaScript that processes the slider code isn't working properly and fails to initialize the images. No numbers appear between the arrows (< / >), but when it works then I see a count (< 1/70 >).

There is noscript code that shows the images when JavaScript is disabled. You can see that in action if you disable JavaScript for this session via the developer toolbox settings window.

What do we do now? Should we create a bug report?

Firefox 58 will be out in a few days (probably next Tuesday), so you can wait to see if that improves it or that you still have issues.
