After I downloaded and installed the latest software release from Apple, my Firefox bookmarks from my Mac desktop computer disappeared on my iPad. I went through the same process with my iphone and it is fine, all bookmarks present and in sync. Any suggestions for a fix? Everyhing thst should be turned on between the devices is as it should be so I am at a loss to work out how to restore the bookmarks. thanks

Thanks.

I think you should try to "Disconnect" and then login again on your iPad in Firefox iOS. Maybe this already fixes the problem.

If not, here is the more drastic option: Uninstall and then reinstall Firefox iOS app on your iPad. This will definitely delete its local data, my hope is that on reinstallation you have to log in to your Firefox account again and it will successfully sync your settings and bookmarks. (Disclaimer: I am not 100% sure that all your settings will be synced back to your iPad - I only know that bookmark sync is reliable, about the rest I have no experience.)

Just to make sure: You are using Firefox for iOS on your iPad and are logged in to your Firefox account there?

What does it say next to "Sync Now" under you account login email in "Settings"? How many bookmarks are we talking? The iPad has a working internet connection? Tried "Disconnect" and then logging in again already?

more options

Thanks. Yes, internet connection is fine. All aspects of sync are working except Bookmarks of which there are maybe 150, if they were present. Beside “sync now”, it give a date of 8:55 pm on 12 October, which is just the evening before I downloaded and installed Apple’s 11.0.2 software update. When I click on Sync Now it buffers for a couple of seconds and then ... nothing happens. I am stumped (and so is Apple Tech Support). Rod

That's interesting. So the update marker is fixed to before the update, and manual syncing does nothing now. Super strange.

Is there space on the device? On other devices syncing works as intended? Did you already restart the app? Did you already restart the device? Did you already reinstall the app?

There is plenty of space on the iPad. Syncing is working for everything else. When you say "restart the app" (and reinstall) what do you mean, please? Which app? The iPad has been restarted various times.

thanks

  • What is "everything else" that is synced?
  • Restart = Double click home button, swipe the app away
  • Reinstall = Long tap the icon, tap the (x) to uninstall, then reinstall from App Store
  • App = Firefox for iOS

I mean, all the other features that are synced across my apple devices are working as normal - notes, photos, itunes, etc. It’s just the bookmakers on the iPad that have disappeared and are not reappearing let alone syncing.

If I uninstall Firefox and reinstall it, don’t I have to start all over again with any customised features I have previously made in settings like browsing mode, home page, toolbar configurations and so on? I;m pretty bad at all this sort of thing and to be honest can barely remember how I managed to do all those things the first time around apart from by random experiment.

Firefox Sync and the other synced things are totally different: Notes, Photos, iTunes etc. are synced by iOS, the operating system. Firefox Bookmarks are synced via Firefox Sync from your Firefox account. Two different things.

You are talking about the bookmarks in the Firefox iOS app, not Safari, correct?

Are your Firefox settings and customizations identical on your iPhone and iPad already?

more options

Hi again I understand that they are separate. i was only saying that it is just Firefox bookbarks (yes - definitely the Firefox bookmarks, not Safari) which have not survived the software update from Apple. Settings and configurations are identical on my iphone and ipad.

Okay, great. I have to make sure before I (random guy from the internet) tell you to do stuff that might actually loose your data.

What does Settings -> Sync Now show on your iPhone where the bookmarks are present?

What does "Sync Settings" in your desktop Firefox under "Firefox Account" in "Settings" say? All checked?

Hi

On my phone, beside Sync now, it says that the last sync was a few minutes ago. On my iPad, it says the last sync was 9 October at 20:55. (But in the account settings, it says that the last sync was three hours ago.) When I click on "sync now', it buffers for a couple of seconds but nothing happens. So it looks like Firefox is trying to sync on my iPad but nothing has actually synced since 9 October.

Hi I went into settings and, under devices and apps, I disconnected the iPad, leaving just the Mac and the iphone showing. I then signed back in using my Firefox password, and got a screen message saying “you are now ready to use Firefox Sync” but in the settings page I found the Sync Now button had no effect and is still showing the last sync as having taken place on 9 October. And still no bookmarks.

I am feeling uncertain about completely uninstalling Firefox and reinstalling it in the hope of retreiving the bookmarks and their sync by doing so. When you talk about losing local data as a consequence of doing so, what do you mean?

I would be more confident in making major adjustments if Firefox’s support pages were even remotely helpful but I find them so opaque and lacking in relevant detail - not to mention always talking about settings and screen configurations which bear little relation to thos (which are completely up to date) on my own device - that I am reluctant to take steps which I cannot easily correct of things go wrong in the absence of good technical advice. (Sorry, that sounds whiney ...)

Try the "Disconnect" button at the bottom of the "Settings" screen.

> When you talk about losing local data as a consequence of doing so, what do you mean?

Everything in Firefox iOS on your iPad, that is not synced to your Firefox account already (or is excluded from Sync). I am not sure there is anything relevant at all that is not synced, but I don't know how you are using your Firefox iOS on your tablet.

For me personally, the only important things are those I have on my desktop machine and from there synced to my mobile devices. So I would not hesitate to just delete everything on my tablet - because everything I need will come back as soon as I log back in.

So the question is: If you lost your iPad, would it be enough to sync the bookmarks back from your Firefox account or would this be really tragic? My guess: You would be fine. So you can also reinstall the app.

Re the support pages... I was surprised when I found this forum here. My own questions got no response at all, but I thought I could invest a few minutes to help other poor souls that wait for help ;)

Tried that Disconnect button. Same process for signing back in, same outcome.

I guess I will need to do the complete reinstall of Firefox on the iPad.

Thank you very much for your advice so far. I appreciate it.

To be honest, not very surprised that the Disconnect also didn't work - something seems to be broken with the local Firefox iOS files where the synced data is saved. On Android you could delete those manually, on iOS not so much :(

Let me know how the un- and re-install turns out.

Hi Jan Pleased to say that reinstalling Firefox did the trick. All bookmarks back and syncing now. Many thanks for your kind advice. Rod
