I asked my email provider for their policy regarding email storage, to find out if they are causing the problem.

That leads me to believe you are using IMAP mail as Thunderbird calls the folder Trash.
</p><p>In IMAP we regularly see people concerned because they were unaware their mail provider has automated setting that empty trash, and generally age their emails and make decision on their age. For example archiving mail over a year, emptying the trash daily/weekly/monthly etc. In a synchronized environment everything can cause mail to "just disappear"
