Firefox tab searching sometimes can't find open tab

I have nearly 2000 tabs open as a result of browsing the internet for a decade and because I don't use bookmarks. In order to find a previously visited website I open a new window or tab and search for the site by typing in a partial name or address in the address bar (where the URL normally goes). This gets me a list of matches and I select the desired site whereupon the window or tab closes and I am taken to the tab containing said site.

The problem is that sometimes Firefox can't find the open tab. Typing in the title of the tab does not reveal any matches. Firefox search simply seems to lose grasp of which tabs are open. I can make it work again by manually finding the old tab, opening a new tab and pasting in the address of the old one. Firefox can then find the tab again.

Manually finding the old tab can be quite time consuming and is very annoying. Is there any way to fix Firefox so that it can find open tabs?
