Firefox does not play online videos that are "powered by JW Player 7.11.1". They get stuck on a "Loading ad" screen that goes on forever. Examples: http://www.spiegel.de/video/donald-trump-ist-in-saudi-arabien-gelandet-video-1768050.html http://www.sueddeutsche.de/politik/russland-affaere-ueberschattet-trumps-erste-auslandsreise-1.3514809 Happens in Firefox, including in Safe Mode and with all plugins deactivated. Doesn't happen in IE. No adblocker installed. And yes, I am in Germany, so the content should be accessible to me. All other web video content that is not "powered by JW Player 7.11.1" (BBC, CNN, ABC, YouTube, ...) works fine. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you!

Your System Details shows you are using Firefox 52.1.2

There is no such version. Download Firefox For All languages And Systems {web link}

Strange, because I used that version. Updated now to version 53.0.3. The problem still remains the same.

Go to the Mozilla Add-ons Web Page {web Link} (There’s a lot of good stuff here) and search for a good ad / pop-up blocker.

Firefox 52.1.2 is the current ESR 52 version.

What media player is used?

Flash based or the HTML5 media player in your case?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

You can remove all data stored in Firefox from a specific domain via "Forget About This Site" in the right-click context menu of an history entry ("History -> Show All History" or "View -> Sidebar -> History").

Using "Forget About This Site" will remove all data stored in Firefox from that domain like bookmarks and history and cookies and passwords and cache and exceptions, so be cautious. If you have a password or other data from that domain that you do not want to lose then make sure to backup this data or make a note.

You can't recover from this 'forget' unless you have a backup of involved files.

If you revisit a 'forgotten' website then data from that website will be saved once again.

Thank you for your suggestions. Adblocker is not an option because one of the sites won't work at all with adblocker. This also happens in safe mode and with all plugins disabled and I also checked the hardware acceleration. Nothing helped. Microsoft Edge does not load either, but everything works fine in Chrome.

Load the web page. After the page is loaded, click the down arrow next to the AdBlock icon. Now select Disable on <website>. Reload the page.

As I said, the website is blocked when I use an adblocker and I can't see anything. When I use adblocker and unblock this website, the "loading ad" is unblocked too. This just moves in circles.

Exactly the same question was posted here yesterday :

https://support.jwplayer.com/customer/portal/questions/17040587-videos-stuck-on-loading-ad-

(no answer, yet   ........  )

I posted the question there as well. Apparently, not many people have this problem, otherwise there would be more discussions on the web.

To see what's going on here, I went to check out the videos on Der Spiegel,   and they play just fine for me. In your first post you already said that you tried Safe Mode and that you do not use AdBlock Plus,   but   (stab in the dark) :   is your VLC media player up to date   ?   (latest version : 2.2.5.1)

Thank you for staying on with me! But no, VLC Player is up to date, so this can't be the cause.

The fact that you have the same problem when you use Edge, indicates that this is not a Firefox issue   (yay   !).

Went to check out every JWPlayer article I could find, to see if there were any clues there,   but where did I wind up   ? Right :   https://support.jwplayer.com/customer/portal/questions/17040587-videos-stuck-on-loading-ad-   (the question that you posted there)

Guess we'll have to wait for them to finally come up with an aswer. You could tell them that you have posted this on a public forum,   where everybody can see it   ........   ;)

And I also know now it is ad-related. The ad doesn't load and everything gets stuck. Videos without ad play fine.

Whoa   !   I always get mad at people when they overlook something that was mentioned in the original question,   but now I caught myself doing it,   cause you   did   mention:

a "Loading ad" screen
Went to look for an answer as to what this could mean, but couldn't find anything. Would it be possible for you to provide a screenshot of such message   ?

This is how it looks like (with no changes, will go forever like this):

Has to be JavaScript related   (I think   ...... )

A complete stab in the dark,   but would you give this add-on a try :

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/firebug/

(In   about:config   the preference   'javascript.enabled'   has it's value set to   'true',   right   ?)

more options

Yes, javascript.enabled is set to true.

Just saw the response you got from   JWPlayer :

https://support.jwplayer.com/customer/portal/questions/17040587-videos-stuck-on-loading-ad-

Looks like you need to ask Der Spiegel and Süddeutsche Zeitung who their
ad tag provider is   .......
