All of my bookmarks and history is gone, the restore fuction shows the back up dates but there is no back up available

I shut off my computer, restarted the next day and all history, bookmarks are gone. I tried to use the restore function, the dates show 143 items but after clicking on a restore date the message is "Unable to process the backup file."
