Lets try using the alternate profile manager:

  1. Click here to download the advanced profile manager ZIP file
  2. Extract the contents of the ZIP file
  3. Open the executable program
  4. In the profile manager click the New button
  5. Enter a name for your profile
  6. Leave the location as the default
  7. Find the installed Firefox if the profile manager cannot access it
  8. Check Make this profile the default
  9. Click Ok
  10. Double click the profile that you just made

Does Firefox open now? If not, delete the profile you just created and repeat steps 3-10, but change the location for step 6 to somewhere on your computer that it will not be accidentally deleted by you. Then try opening Firefox again, via double clicking the profile manager.

I sincerely hope that this will get Firefox working for you. I have never had this much difficulties ever in the 3 years that I've been with Mozilla.

what is the name of the executable program? I put everything out of the zip file onto my desktop. I opened each document. But could not find something opening that gave me a profile manager with a new button to click. When I click on Profile manager I get this : [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE) [nsIINIParserFactory.createINIParser]" nsresult: "0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://profilemanager/content/ini.js :: getINIParser :: line 93" data: no]

Yup, it should be the profilemanager.exe file, but it sounds like that's not working.

I've got a couple of questions for that may help us get to the bottom of your issue:

  1. Your original problem was with the installation because you hadn't downloaded Firefox from the official website. Where did you get your first Firefox installer from?
  2. What anti-virus and/or firewall software are you running on your system?
  3. Have you previously installed Firefox on this system?

Once again, sorry for the inconvenience. It usually isn't this difficult. So sorry for all of the effort that you are having to put in to this issue. I've discussed your problem with colleague and they should have some steps for you to try on here shortly.

staples.ca downloaded the Firefox that did not work for me, in one of their store (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Leila Staples). Before they touched my hard disk, I had no problems with the version I had on my computer. We used Avast for virus protection. Now they put on Kaspersky. It seems to mess up everything. I have been having so many issues since they messed up my hard drive, that I do not trust them anymore. I figured out on my own how to make my Kindle app for PC work again. Your program is not the only one that does not open anymore : Spotify, Viber, Opera speed dial, also do not work. I had to go back to staples 7 times because of issues. Hopefully, your colleagues can help with Firefox Mozilla.

Wait to see what Wesley suggests, but I am wondering if a Clean Reinstall may help. I will not post instructions for that, as I tend not to use Windows all that much these days and Wesley probably understands your situation far better than I do.

If you try that take care not to remove your multiple Firefox profiles. The profile will store logins and bookmarks. Are you likely to have such data on the problem computer. If you have never had Firefox working on this computer it will not have any useful information in the profiles, unless possibly you have Synced them.

  • Have you used Firefox on the problem computer before ?
  • Have you synced or otherwise trued to transfer Firefox profile data to this computer ?

This May Help As you will need Firefox urgently a temporary workaround may be to install the third party Firefox portable either on the hard disk or just on a Memory stick that should at least enable you to use the University resources.

although Firefox Mozilla was on the computer before this mess was done to it, I have never used it much. But it is open and worked fine. The problem is what the Staples store technician did to the hard drive. The computer has 2 accounts on it. The program opens fine in the other account. So yes, I can go to this other account if I need too. But Firefox Mozilla is not the only problem on my account. They really messed up my account and I need this fixed. Se we are planning to have a high school computer science teacher to come to our house where the computer is and have him look at it and help solve this mess. We also have other computer knowledgeable friends who can come and help. In the meantime, if Wesley and his team can figure out a way to get this program to work on my account, that would be great and might provide important information as to all the other problems and how to fix them too.

Yes, it sounds like the technician incorrectly configured your user account or may have damaged it. I would recommend returning it to the original technician or the company and explain that it has not been working properly since it was repaired at the store. They may fix it free of charge.

The issue is not with Firefox, but rather your operating system. You will likely need to get that repaired before you are able to run Firefox properly.

In the meantime, I would recommend trying the portable version of Firefox, as recommended by John99.

You can try post number 3 on this forum for your user profile folder (C;/Users/{Username}) if you want.

Also, we this system originally configured for Windows 10 or was it upgraded from a different operating system?

I updated to Windows 10 last July 2016. Everything was fine then. We had Windows 7 before.

But, thanks to our long conversation at figuring things out, I have kept on file all the suggestions you both made. It will help whoever deals with the problem better understand the situation and finally solve the mess.

Thank you both for your help. It feels good to know that such expertise is available to a non-expert like me.

Glad that we can provide you with some information. Sorry that it's been such a hassle and that we really haven't solved your problem yet.

If possible, please share information on how to solve the problem if you do manage to get a technician to repair your system.

I will for sure. Thank you again.

Hi notagamer, If you are still interested in trying to sort this out yourself lets first of all re-try the instructions for deleting the profiles. I have varied the suggestions slightly. Note the instructions I have added to take screenshots. Do not go as far as deleting the profiles unless you are sure they have no useful information, but do take and attach the screenshots so we see what you are doing.

Please note the command prompt is not the same as the Run dialogue.

At a command prompt type in

DIR %appdata%

And take a screenshot of it to attach to a reply if it fails. Now navigate to the directory by typing in

CD %appdata%

That will navigate to something like

C:\Users\<NAME>\AppData\Roaming

Type in

DIR M*

Again take a screenshot - it will probably capture Mozilla and any others starting M If there is a Mozilla directory and it is to be deleted now use

RD /S Mozilla

Confirm it was deleted with

DIR M*

A similar technique should be able to delete the program files for a clean install. If there are permission problems despite being an Admin try it from Windows SafeMode but I will explain that later.
