Adobe Acrobat X Pro addin/plugin problem with Firefox.

more options

3 computers 2 with Win 10 and 1 with win 7. Firefox used to allow the Adobe Acrobat X Pro plugin and now it doesn't. I need this program plugin to work. I even tried installing a prior version of FF which the plugin worked with in the past but, now...no. All I can find on this site is an update for Acrobat Reader--which I don't need, want or use. I also don't use cloud products.

I truly love FF and I appreciate that you have made a browser availabe that is light-years better then IE, however, I hate that Firefox forces upgrades and makes prior versions useless. i understand that the upgrades/updates are to my benefit but I believe in "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", especially when you disable something I use frequently and need to run my business.

Please, please, please tell me, in non-teckie language, how to fix this plugin so that it works. I really need your help. I am willing to reinstall the latest FF version if you can instruct me on how to make the Acrobat X Pro plugin enable.

My email is ... I am desparate, guys!

Could you clarify which add-on has the problem:

  • Adobe Acrobat plugin -- used to read PDFs in a tab
  • Create PDF extension -- adds a toolbar button to convert the current page to a PDF

When you posted, the forum software identified two Adobe Acrobat plugins from completely different versions:

- Adobe PDF Plug-In For Firefox and Netscape 10.1.16 => X - Adobe PDF Plug-In For Firefox and Netscape 15.17.20050 => DC

Not sure if having both is creating a problem.

Okay, can you check the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then look for Adobe Acrobat - Create PDF (or similar title) on the right side. If it is disabled, it will be on a grayed background at the bottom.

If the extension is enabled but not working, hmm, what version is it? If that doesn't show on the page, click the "More" link for the extension.

If the extension is disabled and cannot be enabled, there should be an explanation either just above the title, or on the informational page you can access using the "More" link.

Does that lead to any additional information?

It is Adobe plugin for Firefox and Netscape 10.1.16.13

The red caution says Adobe Acrobat is known to be vunerable and should be updated. When i click on the update button/link it downloads an update for Adobe Reader....I don't use Adobe Reader...I use Adobe Acrobat Pro which creates a document that I can edit.

Okay, hold on. We are looking at two different things.

Plugin -- this is for reading PDFs in a tab, not for converting pages to PDF.

What is the permission setting for the plugin? The choices are:

  • Always Activate - not available in this case
  • Ask to Activate - you can use the plugin but are warned about its age
  • Never Activate - updating is mandatory

To update Acrobat, go to Acrobat (stand-alone), and on the Help menu, Check for Updates. I can't recall whether 10.1.16 is the last update for Acrobat X or not. If that's the last update, then the only way to use an Acrobat plugin in Firefox is to install Adobe Reader XI or DC. Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Reader can coexist, but you may need to restore Acrobat to be the default handler for PDFs after installing Reader.

Extension -- to view the information for the extension, click Extensions in the left column of the Add-ons page.

10.1.16.13 is the latest update for Acrobat X Pro and it is not an addon option... it is a plugin option (in Firefox) that converts pages and which FF doesn't accept any more. All the info is in my prior post. the always active is greyed out and not available ask to activate gives me the message i posted above and that only updates Acrobat reader which does not convert the page. The plugin icon for Acrobat reader has a black background. The plugin icon for Acrobat converter has a white background. This is the one that FF will not allow me to enable. I know my acrobat pro is up to date and my internet settings in the acrobat program are correct. The problem is in FF.

Did jscher2000's last post explain the situation with Acrobat X and Firefox. It apperas you need to use Acrobat XI or DC not Acrobat X.

If 10.1.16.13 is the latest update but not secure I guess you get the warning; and an in that case unecessary, option to update; but can not update because Adobe do not provide an update.

So the plugin permission is Ask to Activate? In that case, you can use the plugin by giving permission on a site-by-site basis.

However, the Adobe Acrobat plugin has nothing to do with creating PDFs. It is only for use in a tab to view a PDF.

If the problem is with creating PDFs, look at the left column of the Add-ons page and click Extensions. Then on the extensions list look for Adobe Acrobat - Create PDF.
