I use windows basic theme because aero causes a blinking cursor in one of my drawing programs. Aero seems to fix this issue but I still would much rather live with it than have it fixed but my art program bug out.

My issue with the download arrow only occurs 3/4 of the time. May be dependent on amount of tabs open (20 max)

Last month, the only issue with mozilla was if I had 10+ tabs open, there would be some artifacts at the top of the window above and on the tabs themselves. This would go away when I minimized mozilla and brought it back up. After a fresh OS install when I got a new SSD about 3 weeks ago, I noticed that along with the tab issue, the animated download arrow would freeze on the last frame of the animation. When I mouse over the bookmarks/buttons around it, the frozen bits disappear but only over the things that have changed (highlighted buttons when moused over etc). In the process of getting a replacement SSD due to a defective first one, I have reinstalled windows about 4-5 times now, each time with this issue. The first time, everything was up to date including windows. Windows refuses to find any updates until about 4 days after a reformat, so currently I am out of date. But since my issue occurred when I was up to date, I assume this is a bug with mozilla itself. The fact that when I was running an older version of mozilla before my first reformat, I didn't have the issue, makes me think this as well. I also noticed today that the animated heart when pressing the like button on tumblr does the same thing, floats up and freezes on the last frame of animation as seen here: http://puu.sh/pyxgx/198461de3b.png

Also, when I open mozilla, or close/open a new tab, there are black lines that are grouped close together near the bottom of my screen for a split second that were not there with my old version. I can live with those, just thought I'd mention them in case they help diagnose my problem.

To test that it IS an issue with the recent mozilla update, is there any way to install an old version of mozilla without the installer finding the new versions online and forcing me to use those?

I forgot to mention that I've tried running mozilla in safe mode, but that did not stop the issue.

I also do not use hardware acceleration.

Usually those kinds of graphics artifacts indicate a minor incompatibility with your graphics card driver software. Typically disabling hardware acceleration works around those, but as Firefox's graphics code has gotten more complex over the years, it's possible that the "master switch" for hardware acceleration no longer bypasses all the various functions that could trigger this issue.

Are any updates available for your drivers? This article suggests safe ways to check: Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL.

My gpu drivers are up to date, I could try to downgrade to the driver from last year to see if the problem persists, as I never had this with the out of date driver.

I'll post the results soon, as windows updates are giving me enough trouble to tackle at the moment.

You can check for issues caused by plugins.

  • set plugins to "Ask to Activate" on the about:addons page ("3-bar" menu button or Tools > Add-ons > Plugins)
  • plugins are not affected by Firefox Safe Mode

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen or hold down the Shift key) to see if that has effect.

The only plugin that allowed ask to activate was shockwave, but setting it to that didn't fix it. I disabled all my plugins (The only thing I have downloaded for mozilla is grease monkey) but the issue still was there, even in safe mode.

I've disabled all plugins and extensions, then restarted in safe mode with networking and it still happens. The last thing I can try is completely wipe my gpu drivers and go back to the old one I was using earlier this year, but I want to wait until I can manage to get windows updater to download updates rather than just say it's checking endlessly.

I am in the process of preparing to send in my gpu for a warranty replacement as it has been crashing its entire life with up to date drivers, maybe that will fix it.

Another thing I just thought about, I could try my on board graphics to see if that fixes anything.

Also as a test, if possible it would be easier than taking my gpu out, is there ANY way to install an older version of mozilla? When I use a back up installer from a while ago it connects to the internet and will not let me install it, and instead forces me to download the new version.

See:

All Firefox releases:

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

You need to close and restart Firefox after toggling this setting.

You can check if there is an update for your graphics display driver and check for hardware acceleration related issues.

Hmm, I'm not sure which of your adapters Firefox is using if both are currently enabled. You can try the support information page for more information (you can copy/paste the Graphics section from this page if you like, don't worry that it looks messy here). To open that, either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

Then scroll down to the Graphics section for information about what adapter(s) Firefox "sees" and how it is assessing it/them.

Also as a test, if possible it would be easier than taking my gpu out, is there ANY way to install an older version of mozilla?

For Firefox 46.0.1? You can choose between the standard 32-bit release and the less well tested 64-bit release here: https://download-installer.cdn.mozilla.net/pub/firefox/releases/46.0.1/

Then drill down to the relevant locale code (for example en-US = U.S. English). If you need help identifying your locale, check the address bar on this site for guidance as the code usually is in there.

Since you appear to be using the 64-bit release now, I'm not sure how you switch, as Firefox may or may not successfully replace the existing program folder. I guess you'll find out!

From reading what you said about the graphics section, my understanding is that you wanted that information: http://puu.sh/pyPcZ/86b6676886.png

My brother is using the same version of mozilla so I had him change to a windows basic theme, and try the same things that trigger the bug with me, and he had no issues. His GPU is even running an out dated driver!

Perhaps this is just an issue with nvidia putting out buggy drivers, as I only noticed the sticking animations around the time I updated my drivers, or my card is slowly giving out.

Thank you all for your help! Since this is the last day this week I have a whole day to tinker around, I'll tool around and see what happens over the coming week and post my results (I dislike when people reply "I fixed it yay!" then never tell how). Since my issue doesn't occur on a similar pc with the same version of mozilla, that has an outdated gpu driver, I think it's safe to say that mozilla is not the problem, but either a buggy new gpu driver, or a corrupt install of some motherboard drivers. No matter what, I'll have a go at all of this and post my findings here next week!

I enabled hardware acceleration and that solved the issue. But also caused my failing gpu to crash when using mozilla, but I'm getting a replacement soon so it's all good!
