But how do you replace the Android system on an Android phone or the Windows on a Windows phone, aren't they designed to work with only their own OS?? Can you wipe a phone completely so it is no longer Apple, no longer Windows, no longer Android??

 I would assume that the phone would have to be developed from scratch to use a different operating system; not Apple and not Android and not Windows.  All of those companies snoop on 100% of what people do on their phones and then sell that information to marketers and other companies.   I want a phone that is a clean sheet with only Mozilla OS and Mozilla approved apps that do not track me, do not watch me, do not collect data on me, do not listen to me (they all are starting to collect voice prints even.  It drive me nuts that companies are doing this.

For *some* phones, it is possible to remove (most of) android and install firefox os. But for most phones available today, mozilla doesnt have access to low-level components due to proprietry technologies. In short, it is easy to remove an OS, but very difficult to make your phone turn on without it. Mozilla is working at making it easier for android phones, but it is slow progress...

Is Mozilla planning on developing a smartphone that works from the start on it's own OS??

That is what the world needs in my humble opinion, a smartphone that does not collect our personal data for profit. No Apple. No Android/Google. No Facebook making profit off our messages. Just a capable phone that works but doesn't watch/track our lives and doesn't sell our data.

FirefoxOS has so far been sold on far less fancy/pricey devices than a top-of-the-line Galaxy S model. (The Fx0 in Japan is an exception, but even that does not have as large a screen.)

Perhaps 2016 will bring something interesting; Mozilla often makes important announcements at the Mobile World Congress event.

I'll keep my eyes peeled for the announcement. I now have a Windows Lumia 640, nice midlevel phone however I had to go in and turn off about 8 defaults that allowed Microsoft to collect virtually everything I did; photos, messages, contacts, locations, and even my voice data ie: listen to my speech patterns and record my voice!!! Unbelievable. Skynet is already here and it's called Android/Google, Windows, and even Apple.

I hope Mozilla will come out with a totally private system where the OS and the apps do not collect anything at all. If the government cannot (or should not) collect our data then why is it OK for a corporation to do the same?? That's what I don't understand.

Firefox OS is out there as some Panasonic Tvs are using Firefox OS this year and there was a tablet but never got released.
