After some Firefox updates, and in particular the latest (40.0) my HP Simplepass stops loading/starting when needed. Its icon isn't in the toolbar though it was before. Tools/Add-ons says it is always available. I 'repaired' it from Windows control panel and that didn't help.

And one day later, after a couple reboots, it all starts up again. Quicker than before (Simplepass is really, really slow.)

Working fine today.

Are you on the latest version of HP SimplePass? The latest official version of SimplePass is version 8.01.39 Rev.A, and can be downloaded from here.

Hi Muttley35, is it possible to link to the page hosting that file instead of directly to the EXE? As a safe computing practice, we don't recommend following direct links to EXE files in this or any forum.

This is why computers get such a bad name . . (and I'm a geek - 12 years assembler programming and 50 years in the biz designing networks.)

- I get prompted to upgrade Firefox, which I do (several hours ago)
- My Simplepass stops working and I get two different suggestions as to the latest version
- I have HP Support Assistant that assures me all my software is up-to-date
- HP and HPE are popping up notices that they are different companies and do I know if I am at the right support site.
- The first download of the "latest" version says it isn't compatible with my OS and to download the correct version (huh? - the HP list says it is.)
- so here we are at 5pm and I still haven't got a working password storage system

And no-one has explained why it stops working after upgrades - sometimes !!

I downloaded it again and it went to completion and wants to restart my computer. So I'll go and let it and report if it now works. Stay tuned.

Some add-ons need to be updated for every new version of Firefox that is released -- mainly add-ons that employ Binary components or code. Been that way sine Firefox 5 or 6; some add-on developers have an update available the day of the new Firefox release, others seem to routinely caught unaware of the update (not keeping track of Firefox 6-week schedule for new versions coming out, which anyone can view here - https://wiki.mozilla.org/RapidRelease/Calendar ) or the add-on developer takes few versions "off" while they scratch their heads and figure how to fix "what got broke".

I am running series 6 HP Simplepass and it is the latest version. Series 8 and series 6 are not compatible nor are they upgradable. Series 6 worked fine until yesterday. Will a fix be coming?

I am struggling through the documentation for Simplepass V.8, which, as mentioned above, is totally different. [I recalled why. Simplepass 6 was produced by Authentec, and Apple bought them and came out with fingerprint recognition on the iPhone. HP must have decided to write their own version. Hence Simplepass 8 is radically different. And doesn't preserve the old password files - be warned.] More later. .

OK. Simplepass now shows up in the "Add-on extensions" as enabled, but it isn't doing anything. Documentation claims it is compatible with Firefox 38, so I guess this Vers 8 isn't compatible with Firefox 40; Simplepass 6 wasn't either.

Guess I need to go and prod HP to fix Simplepass. In the meantime, back to using my password file. . .

I have the same problem. From what I've researched there is no answer. There is no way to contact Mozilla either, as you are only re-directed to forums and no technical assistance available from Mozilla that I can find. This is frustrating as my explorer browser doesn't work with my internet provider very well as they have everything under the sun blocked by their "firewall" and I get tired of calling them to "unblock" things. That is why I used firefox browser in the first place. I guess we just have to wait until someone techy can hack into firefox's tech's to get any answers.

simple pass 8 does not work the same as 6, i prefer 6 is there any solution to get the brower that is now 40 to accept 6

"There is no way to contact Mozilla either" Au Contraire. This forum has worked very well - some of the responses have been from Mozilla developers.

"simple pass 8 does not work the same as 6, i prefer 6" I prefer Simplepass 6 too, but as I commented, Apple bought the company that made it, so I suspect HP had to write their own version - Simplepass 8.

Whatever update was put into Firefox that stopped Simplepass was probably necessary for security, so I think we have to accept it is HP's problem. I've been trying to post messages over on their forums.

i agree and i will be doing the same

Interesting. Another Firefox update and Simplepass 8 is almost working. It doesn't seem to be very good at remembering passwords, and it takes foorreevveeerrr to pop up when I get a login screen, but it's progress!

so mine simple pass is still not working an i have 40.0.2 so what is different about your browser that got it to work

more options

I have 40.0 which updated yesterday or the day before. It says I can update to 40.0.2, but I haven't done that yet.

Simplepass 8 isn't working like 6, but it is working. It takes forever to start. The sites it works with are listed on the "mylaunchsite" page, and I have no idea how they get on the page!

i have simplepass 6 i dont like the way 8 works and simple does not work at all in 40.0.2 something about security added

This is an extremely frustrating issue.

I do not know which Firefox update caused my HP Simple Pass to stop functioning. I am currently running Firefox 40.0.3 and HP Simple Pass 6.0.100.276 (no other versions of Simple Pass are compatible with my laptop).

All I do know is that I use my fingerprint scanner to log into my online accounts to pay bills on a monthly basis. It last worked near the end of August. I cannot find a list of Firefox versions and the date they were released so I do not know which version my HP Simple Pass last worked properly with.

Does anyone know the update history for Firefox updates? That would allow me to possibly pinpoint where things went haywire for me and my system.

Is it possible to revert back to a previous version of Firefox that is known to allow HP Simple Pass to function properly?

If so, please explain how to download a previous version of Firefox please.

the version that stopped simple pass from working was firefox 39 i am pretty sure, this is the mozilla link but even though it will most likely work there is as stated on the site a security risk. i too have simple pass 6 an yes it does not work on the sites only log in, its frustrating but i have learned to manage

For security reasons, it is best not to roll back to the regular release of Firefox 38. Instead, you could consider a different variant of Firefox called the Extended Support Release (ESR). This is designed for companies that require a longer cycle time between feature changes, and coincidentally is currently is based on Firefox 38. It will get security updates over the next several months, but not get new features, so hopefully it will stay compatible for quite a while.

If you decide to try it, here is how I suggest installing it:

Clean Reinstall

We use this name, but it's not about removing your settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean (no inconsistent, corrupted, or alien code files). As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. Do NOT uninstall Firefox, that's not needed.

(A) Download a fresh installer for Firefox 38.2.1esr from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/organizations/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.)

(B) Exit out of Firefox (if applicable).

(C) Rename the program folder, either:

(64-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files (x86)\Fx40

(32-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files\Fx40

(D) Run the installer you downloaded in (A). It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

Does that work with your HP SimplePass add-on?

Note: Some plugins may exist only in that old folder. If something essential is missing, look in these folders:

  • \Fx40\Plugins
  • \Fx40\browser\plugins

I think Simplepass 6 is gone. As I commented before, Apple bought the company and uses the technology on the iPhone6. HP probably had no choice but to write their own.

Some progress is beng made. Simplepass 8 now shows up on my heading as an icon next to the three bar 'options' icon. Can't move it.

Several websites have arrived in "MyLaunchSite" in Simplepass 8. Some are duplicated and (a) I have no idea how to remove them and (b) I have no idea how they got there. I am testing various ways of clicking the icon as I sign on to other websites - somehow they got added. The sites that are included get 'launched' (duh) when you click the icon and you get signed in. It works if the login is on the page - not so much when it's a dropdown.
