Problems with profiles

Hi Guys,

Usually I wouldn't bother doing this and just use Chrome, but I really want some help to get my Firefox Browser working again. Basically, a couple of days my computer had a memory problem, and I had to reinstall everything from a back up. All my software was deleted, and ever since then I have had issues getting Firefox to work.

I have reinstalled everything, but each time I click on the desktop item to boot up Firefox, I get the following "Firefox has stopped responding, please close" then shortly after I get the "Profile is in use..." error message. I have created a new profile, but when it comes to the point where it has to save my data in a specific directory, I get an error message saying the folder isn't writable. So I select a different writable folder, and Firefox then works and lets me in.

The next problem I have is that the information for that profile don't seem to save. When I open Firefox again, I am asked to make a new profile each time. I have tried running as Administrator which works, but again it doesn't solve my problem because none of my apps or book marks are saved.

Please can somebody help me getting a completely fresh installation of Firefox? I also tried the profile.ini thing, but that hasn't worked for me either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated; not having access is putting quite a damper on my productivity.

Many Thanks,

hi asphyz, can you try renaming the %appdata%\Mozilla folder to something like Mozilla.bak & launch firefox again afterwards? hopefully this would create a new profile and fix any permission issues in the process...

1.Open the folder Mozilla from C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Application Data folder (Windows 2000 and XP) or the C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Roaming folder (Windows Vista and 7) from explorer ,then open successive folders until you get to the profile folder.

2.Then delte the parent.lock file

Reason: If your Mozilla application cannot find the profile folder it will typically report that the profile is in use or, in Firefox that the application "is already running, but is not responding" or that your "profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible". This can happen if you delete, rename or move the profile folder, if you run the application from removable media, or if the profile folder is stored on a network drive.

If possible, you should restore the profile folder to its original name and location, so that your Mozilla application can find it. Alternately, you can edit the "profiles.ini" file to show the changed location (see below) . Another solution is use the Profile Manager to create a new profile that points to the new folder location, by using the "Choose Folder" option during the profile creation process. See Moving your profile folder for more information.

Important: If you deleted your only profile folder, have no backup to restore and are now seeing the "already running" dialog box, delete or rename the profiles.ini file (or its parent Firefox) in the profile folder path. A new default profile will be created when you next start your Mozilla application.

Hi asphyz, Sorry you are having problems reinstalling Firefox.

Obviously we can not see precisely what you did, or what sort of backup was used. Some of us get pretty used to handling multiple installs and profiles, and forget all the pitfalls that need to be avoided.

The problem may be something to do with your manual setup and the locations you are using. You may well have multiple profiles.ini files. For now do not delete any of the profiles that you have created or pre- exist. Some will have important information. One will hopefully be the original profile with most of your data including bookmarks logins and extensions. Newer one may contain useful open session tabs or bookmarks. Note if you used the refresh feature you may have an old profile on the Desktop.

First Lets just rule out it is temporary issue with the restarts.

  1. Give Firefox a few minutes to start up from your launch icon on your desktop.
  2. Copy or make screenshots of any messages, and later paste or attach in your reply.
  3. Did Firefox actually open up ? and then freeze ? Or did you not even see it open.
  4. Wait 10 minutes before attempting to restart Firefox. Use (Windows') Task Manager and kill any Firefox process or plugincontainer process that is continuing to run (There should not be any after 10 minutes ! ) before restarting.

Second do a Clean Reinstall See Firefox keeps crashing at startup_try-a-clean-install I have put the instructions in full lower down. Firefox will try to find a useable pre-existing profile folder. Or otherwise will try to create a new one.

  1. Hopefully that will work and give you a running Firefox.
  2. If so do not worry about it being a new or wrong profile just identify its location and make a very careful note of the full path name. pste that in to your reply (edit to replace sensitive info /<name>/ /<xxxxx>profile etc. )
  3. This clean reinstall of Firefox should restart ok. Does it ? And please check it is still using the same profile as it did when created and noted above.

Please post back to say how you have got on so far. The next step will be to sort out your profiles and data.

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:

Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.

  1. Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from mozilla.org (or choose the download for your operating system and language from this page) and save the setup file to your computer.
  2. After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (or open the Firefox menu New Fx Menu and click the close button Close 29).
  3. Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
  4. Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
    1. Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
    2. Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found here.

WARNING: Do not use a third party uninstaller as part of this process. Doing so could permanently delete your Firefox profile data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. These cannot be easily recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device! See Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles. asphyz said

Now you need to consider if you have any information you have elsewhere in backup profiles, that may get your bookmarks and logins etc back.
