If a web site has a site search engine, it can be added to Firefox.

As to your multi-search, there are add-ons that will look for the best price for a given item. Please look again.

The assumption that the search has to do with price is wrong. Nothing to do with price checking.

I believe I stated in the request, the sites are not a search engine or have a site search engine that Firefox is recognising. I did try to add them to the multi-site search standard in Fx 39 (e.g. green + comes available when the site has an available site search engine that you can add) e.g. goodreads.

But for the sites I mentioned no such + green symbol comes available. Which makes sense to me, as these sites are online catalogs. I do believe I stated this in the question.

There are no add-ons that I have found that allow me to add any site of my choice that I regularly search for the same thing. They all require the site to be a search engine.

Close but not exactly.

The main requirement is to create a custom multi-search that allows me enter my 1 book title once, and then perform this search automatically across the 6 sites (e.g. Amazon Kindle, overdrive.com etc..)

This multi-site search/onesearch is distinct from my normal search google box as I do not want to touch this as I use this to search the internet generally.

I tried many add-ons but stopped after seeing they only work if the site is expecting it to be added as a site search engine (e.g. green + symbol becomes available when you add it to the standard Firefox Seach bar). For example, I could add goodreads, mozilla support to my "standard search bar" but not add overdrive.com or Kindle category of Amazon USA.

I tested the add-on. I am sure I tested this one before but just to make sure. The add-on only allows you to only search 1 site at one time. You may add as many sites to the search bar as you like but still it only allows you to search 1 site at one time.

It does allow me to add 5 of the 6 sites to search bar, but I can only search in one of these sites, not across all 5 at once. So I felt very similar to opening 5 tabs from booksmarks. I have contacted the developer to verify.

Sorry for the confusion, I misread your earlier post. I thought you had an add-on to send the query to multiple plugins and you just needed the plugins.

Thankyou jscher2000. That add-on you suggest, does appear to do the multi-search by grouping them. Still uses standard firefox search bar.

however, I am not comfortable installing as it is not supported any more per the developer post on the add-on page. I am on fx38 and have learnt only add add-ons that are supported as my performance of firefox will likely take a dive which is more frustrating than opening 6 tabs.

I did not realize that such a simple task as searching across 6 sites at 1 time, with same search string e.g. "book title", could be so tricky.

I looked in userscripts too to see if there was one. I noticed universitie have the same concept called "onesearch". However it is not user definable and it is something each university purchases to give the students one search access to all the many databases. But same concept as I am after.

Try Hyperwords. You might not be able to use it to "simultaneously search six sites" (sounds like an awful idea, anyway) but you will be able to customize it as a menu bar dropdown that only shows you the sites you want to search-->go, excluding all else.

Hi jendrew, I saw that, but also that the developer responded to some reviews earlier this year. The add-on is in retirement, but I would not call it abandoned just yet.

In thinking about a user script solution, a less inefficient approach would be for the script to open each site's search page in a new tab, inject the query into the search box, and "click" the search button. Sending a more direct request probably requires generating a POST request, which would involve coding for the diverse parameters you see in the XML files for the various search plugins, and figuring out how to send it. That's not something I can dive into myself.
