a few days ago my firefox started acting weird. after random time, usually about 30 - 100 minutes after using it, it would crash. in fact, it doesnt "crash", but actually just stops loading pages. when i then close it, the firefox process keeps going in the background. and nothing i do, not even terminating it will kill it completely. it just stays.

on this website it says you can try deleting the profile.ini file. so i did that, and it does infact kill the process and let me start firefox again. BUT! this time, it instantly crashes again. on the first page i try to load it dies and doesnt load it, and when i then check the task manager, there is TWO firefox processes (the first one reappears, out of nowhere it seems).

i also tried reinstalling it COMPLETELY (deleting every firefox folder i could find on this pc) and am up to date with the versions. i did the same to java and adobe, just in case. doesnt fix.

there are of course many other things to try on this website, and i think by now i tried all of them. they do work for the moment. they will untangle firefox and let me start it once more, but with not much success as it will create another process and crash right again.

i've also tried safe mode with network, and it actually works there. interestingly, if i then restart the pc again, it will work just one more time without a crash - well, until i shut down the pc and start it a second time, where the problem will reappear.

yesterday the same thing happened to skype! when i started it there then were two skype icons in the task bar, one of them being completely dead (you couldnt even click on it, and right clicking it would open a small, empty box) and the other one being the actual skype, but just not working because no matter how hard you tried, you couldnt log in. however, this was fixed by disabling uPnP in the skype menu. could it have something to do with uPnP? does firefox use it too?

im currently using google chrome while firefox isnt working, and i would love to return to firefox soon. please help! im all out of ideas.

hi thepimpcane, yes firefox 36 did introduce a feature making use of upnp (send video to a roku or chromecast device in a local network). i don't understand how that would cause the issues you've described but it's certainly an interesting correlation. at the moment there isn't a way to switch off that functionality in firefox, but it looks like it is getting implemented in bug #1111967.

If you can't get Firefox to open, you will have to do this the hard way. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/mozillacrashreporter Open the file browser / explorer on your computer. Note: You may have to enable Show Hidden Folders / Files. Enter this in the address bar;

Windows: %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Crash Reports\submitted Win 7/Vista: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Crash Reports\submitted Win XP/2000: C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Crash Reports\submitted

Copy the last 5-7 Recent File Names in the folder. Post the information in the reply box below.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

first of all, i would like to apolozige for the late response and thank you two for answering my help request.

secondly, my problem is "solved". and firefox is not the problem. in fact, firefox is just the victim of some sort of bigger, worse error on my computer. because when i started my computer again on monday, it didnt work. i could click on things on the desktop and move things etc. without a problem, but i could not open anything at all. not even firefox anymore.

so i am guessing firefox and skype just happened to be the first programs to be affected by my broken pc. since this is not related to firefox anymore, i will search for help elsewhere.

still, thank you for your help! goodbye!

Does this happen when you try starting any application (exe).

Some mal-ware changes how exe programs are started.

no, it happens to any file that i have on the computer. stuff like the icons load fine, but i can't actually open anything. might be a problem with my (ugh, new...) SSD that i have. i hope not, that thing was expensive (edit: by new i mean half a year old, in comparison to 4 year old pc)

also, restarting it using the actual "restart" button seems to fix it?

firefox last update is nothing but a headache, i open it up play a game, go to youtube, facebook or anything, it crashes anytime it feels like it. i did refresh, i even uninstalled it and reinstalled it that did do squat. if it keeps up im going to go find another browser.

false information. it just happened to work everytime i used the option "restart" on my pc instead of "shut down" or else.

about 20 % of the time, when i start my pc, it just doesn't work. it will load everything, and you can browse through all folders without problem, but just cant open anything. really strange.

i will try it for a day and see if it crashes/freezes

Hi madmaxxc, I understand that there are more crashes that are crashing with version 16 on them. Did the crashes happen before you updated the plugin?

If so, run the uninstaller for version 16.
