How can I get my Firefox to stop challenging certificates?

Firefox became unresponsive and I tried the Reset Firefox process. Now it is challenging common sites with the "This Connection is Untrusted" warning. In some cases it doesn't give the "I understand the risks" - "Security Exception" option. What do I do next as this is really unusable?

Do you use security software that scans all your web traffic, including secure connections? Common examples of software that has this feature: ESET, Kaspersky. In order to have Firefox trust the fake certificates your security software uses in order to intercept and scan your connections, you need to follow the setup steps for the specific program. We can reference past threads if relevant. Does this sound relevant?

Another possibility would be to copy the certificate store file from your old profile folder into the new one created during the Reset process. This may already have the necessary certificate.

To try that, you will need to copy the cert8.db file between the old folder (located on your desktop inside "Old Firefox Data") and the new folder, which you can open from inside of Firefox using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, click the "Show Folder" button to launch your currently active profile folder in Windows Explorer.

This article has more information on the various files in the profile folder. For best results, exit out of Firefox before replacing any of the files.

Thanks a lot. As expected, the Add-Ons are no longer a part of the new profile and I'm having a difficulty downloading my LastPass Password Manager.

Is there any way to get this item from the old profile? Copying the addons file didn't seem to work.

Just to clarify, did copying the cert8.db file fix the certificate issue?

Regarding LastPass, if it has a globally shared extension, it could be disabled. You can check the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then scroll down, since the disabled extensions cluster at the bottom of the page. If you find LastPass there, go ahead and Enable it and see whether that helps.

If it's not there, you might need to start up LastPass and do something there to push its add-on into Firefox. (I haven't researched exactly how it works.)

Yes the certificate issue is fixed.

The extensions panel is empty in the new profile.

Looks like you need to re-download/re-install the extension. Either:

Thanks for your help. Finally got it from your suggested link above. Previously was experiencing "The add-on could not be downloaded because of a connection failure on lastpass.com"
