entering a URL through the address bar refreshes current page instead

Lately (as of which version, I'm not sure), I've been noticing that if I enter a URL in the address bar of a tab that already has a page open, instead of going to the new URL I entered, Firefox will refresh the current page instead. This happens A LOT and is pretty annoying. Wondering if this happens to anyone else.

Start Firefox using Troubleshoot(Safe) Mode {web link}

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Troubleshoot(Safe) Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

Firefox has a switch to tab feature that can be used to go to a URL you already have opened in another tab. That would be the "Open tabs" suggestion for the location bar. That might be interfering in your case. You can normally override this 'switch to tab' feature and open a new tab if you hold down the Shift key (open in current tab) or Alt key (open in new tab).

You can set what suggestions show when you enter an URL in the location/address bar bar.

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security
    Address Bar: When using the location bar, suggest:
    History
    Bookmarks
    Open tabs
    Top sites
  • Options/Preferences -> Search -> Search Suggestions

Why should *I* have to hold down a modifier/hot key to do something that should be innately available? If I wanted to wheel click into existence another Facebook tab, I shouldn't have some "armchair PhD" telling me I need to hold shift before doing so. There should be an about:config setting to vaporize this complete lucidity. The address bar drop-down should be user opt in or opt out of "Switch to Tab".

Did you already uncheck the box on the Settings/Preferences page?

I don't understand how any of this is relevant to the issue I'm bringing up here. None of the solutions above worked (either safe mode or disabling suggestions)

To reiterate the problem: if I enter a URL in the address bar of a tab that has a page open and press enter, instead of going to the desired site, the tab will instead refresh the page that was already displayed. This happens no matter how many tabs I have open (can be just one).

The issue mostly seems to occur on javascript-heavy pages.

In the past year, a couple sites were identified as causing this behavior, for example:

I filed a bug a few months back, but it hasn't moved. If there's a new example, you could file a new bug. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/
