Why does touching a tab NOW make it disappear without trace - and NO, I did NOT touch the "X" to close it

more options

Since the last update that I foolishly allowed I have been unable to move between tabs - touching a tab kills it and I have NOT been clicking the"X" by mistake.

This means that browsing multiple tabs when searching is a physica limpossibility - if I click for a new tab it arrives but trying to go back to the original tab kills it.

A solution if anyone knows it would be enormously appreciated before I finally despair and change to Google Chrome - yes, I am even desperate enough to conside the Edge.

Hi FedUpWithUpdates, that sounds very frustrating, and definitely not how it's supposed to work.

Do you mean touching with your finger (touchscreen) or clicking with the mouse? I'm not very familiar with touchscreen operations.

When this problem occurs, can you undo the tab closure using either of these methods:

  • right-click another tab and use Undo Close Tab
  • press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+t

On the mouse, the middle button (scroll wheel) click will close the tab you click, but the other buttons definitely should not do that. If you think Firefox has become confused about your mouse's buttons, and you haven't already, try shutting down and restarting Windows.

Thanks for a reply. I use a laptop with scroll mouse as trackpads never cut it for me, LOL.

Thank you also for the tip about right-clicking to undo the tab closure - certainly helps but NOT closing the tab would be better, LOL

Truthfully I can't tell you which button I clicked so it may have been the scroll but obviously I know now to avoid that!

And I have already tried shutting down and even then went for a Restart but still the problem persists.

Thank for the help though.

Please uninstall Firefox. Then Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files(x86) Then restart system. Then run Windows Disk Cleanup. (Note: This should be Pinned and run Weekly, If never done below expect 10's of gig's) Then run it again and click the button that says Cleanup System Files. Note: your Firefox Profile is saved. But you should make a back up before you do :

Reinstall with Current Release Firefox 57.0.4 with a Full Version Installer
