PDFs don't load w/o clearing recent history, also desire2learn PDFs don't load at all.

I've tried to load PDFs from certain websites, and I know they work in IE, but they don't show up unless I clear my recent history. It's getting to the point of absurdity. Adobe has a generic "Try this, this and this" FAQ but won't provide actual support unless I pony up dough for a pro version of Adobe Reader, or some such foolishness.

In addition, my school uses a service called Desire2Learn, which allows instructors to post lecture notes, labs, etc. PDFs for my classes load in IE, but not on Firefox. My school's IT department wants me to bring in my laptop, but I'm a distance student: A 5 hour round trip drive to fix an issue is impractical, to say the least.
