Are you saying that Blekko is your homepage now?

Or that on the default homepage - about:home - that Blekko is the Search Engine in the top part of the window?

The newest release of the "Ad-Aware" Antivirus program has blekko included as part of its toolbar. You can go to the uninstall programs in Windows and remove it from there.

-> Start Firefox in -> Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if your add-ons/extensions are causing the problems.

Check and tell if its working normally while using Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

Also if your search results are being displayed in some other search engine, try this extension to reset Google as your default search engine in Firefox -> SearchReset

This add-on seemed to work. On re-starting, It had changed the startup page to Mozilla Firefox's own page, with a search box. I clicked on 'history' and back to my familiar 'igoogle' set up page, and ' Blekko' had gone from the upper righthand box, and it was back to good old Google.

But when I decided to put an item in the search box on the Mozilla Firefox startup page - it went straight to a Blekko searchpage of results!  ??

As 'Blekko' is some sort of virus, I've no way of knowing what it is doing as it's still hidden in some way within the pc, even though my 'free' scans show no threats are present.

So I am going to return the computer to its factory settings and spend an hour or so setting it up again. And I'll do this every time I want to buy something. Otherwise I won't ever dare buy anything over the net again, in case my card details are being read by these clever malware hackers.

Thank you for all your help. I will follow this thread, and hope someone can find a cure for this nuisance.

Perform the suggestions mentioned below:

-> Do a MALWARE check with these Malware Scanning programs. You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. Make sure that you UPDATE each program to get the latest version of their Databases before doing a Scan. Also, Close All other Applications (softwares) before Starting to Run Scans.

Check and tell if its working.

Blekko is not virus, you agreed to install it when you installed some other program. I needed to download something from CNET (very safe, verified downloads), and I had to agree to d/l at least some part of Blekko for it to proceed.

On Blekko's website (blekko.com), you will find all of the instructions on how to get rid of the toolbar, reset your search engine, etc, (or there are instructions posted in this thread if you don't trust the site).

I did all these by myself, but had one hell of a time changing it so when I simply typed a search term in the header bar it didn't automatically search via Blekko.

Here are the instructions via the site. (CAUTION: messing up your registry is not a good thing. If you are a novice, PLEASE let someone else do this for you!!!)

o change your address bar search:

Type about:config in the address bar and click “Enter”.
This brings up a warning. Click on “I’ll be careful, I promise!”
Type “keyword” in the Search: section and hit enter.
Double-click on the Preference Name keyword.URL.
This will bring up a pop-up. Enter the value of the search engine you would like to use. For Google, enter this exact text in the text field: http://www.google.com/search?q=
Click OK and close and re-open your browser. This should fix your address bar search.

Dont panic if you got the nasty blekko redirect malware. before telling the uninstall proccess, i ould like to tell about blekko virus that what it is.

It is a browser hijacker that comes to your computer from malicious websites. When you brows through some malicious domains or download some untrusted program from internet, it may bring malwares and viruses like Blekko.com redirector. Once it has been installed in your computer, it will hijack your browser and change its configuration. So when you search anything on Google or Bing or even some other populer search engine, the blekko.com will appear or it will lead you to wrong websites instead of the proper search results. The purpose of its redirection is to gain traffic for spam websites. It drives people to spam websites containing advertisements and promotions of scamware products. It may ask the user to pay some dollars (random prices) for some useless products shown in fake websites.

If there is a problem with the about:home Home page then try to reset the search engine used on the about:home page.

Reset the browser.startup.homepage_override.mstone pref via the right-click context menu to the default on the about:config page and close and restart Firefox to restore the about:home page to its default.

  • Open the about:config page via the location bar
  • Type in the Filter bar: mstone
  • Right-click the browser.startup.homepage_override.mstone line and select: Reset
  • Close and restart Firefox

If that didn't help then delete the delete the chromeappsstore.sqlite file in the Firefox Profile Folder and repeat the above.
