I use Google calendar, which supports tasks and I get the message "Please select a calendar that supports tasks" in the today pane under the tasks window after I eliminated the Google calendar provider add-on. All the menu items for tasks are greyed out. Google calendar supports tasks. When will this be fixed?

There are no immediate plans to support tasks in native Thunderbird. Your choices are to use the provider or some other add-on.
