I keep having a problem with a specific web site (weatherunderground) . This problem has been going on for about a month now. Weatherunderground help dept. suggests putting weatherunderground on Firefox's safe site list. How do I do such a procedure? Also, when I try and run Firefox in safe mode, the problem only gets worse, actually far worse? So, running with no add-ons was of no help. I was given a suggestion of creating a new profile some time back. What specifically would that do? I'm trying to avoid making my computer worse off, or creating a bigger problem. Unfortunately, the web site, weatherunderground seems unable to resolve the problem, if it is in fact their problem, and that is sort strange, given that is a big web site and used by many. Can anyone offer any suggestions? Thank you.

Firefox 42+ has a Tracking Protection feature that is enabled by default in Private Browsing mode. When you are in private browsing mode then Firefox can show a shield icon at the left end of the location/address bar that some content is blocked.

You can disable this feature in "Options/Preferences -> Privacy" or via the about:privatebrowsing page that get when you open a New Private Window.

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy: "Use Tracking Protection in Private Windows"

You can set this pref to true on the about:config page to see more Tracking Protection choices in "Options/Preferences -> Privacy".

  • privacy.trackingprotection.ui.enabled

If you use extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) that can block (wanted) content (e.g. Adblock Plus, NoScript, Ghostery, uBlock Origin) always make sure such extensions do not block (wanted) content.

  • make sure your extensions and filters are updated to the latest version

You can try these steps in case of issues with web pages:

You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
  • press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)

Clear the cache and remove the cookies from websites that cause problems via the "3-bar" Firefox menu button (Options/Preferences).

"Clear the cache":

  • Options/Preferences -> Advanced -> Network -> Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove the cookies" from websites that cause problems.

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy -> "Use custom settings for history" -> Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

Hi cor-el, thank you for your reply. When I load the site in question, I don't see any shield icon next to the address bar. When I click on ! icon, (one of the two icons that are next to the address bar in the site in question) it says "you haven't granted this site any special permission". Not sure what that means and not sure if I should do anything about that? I followed your suggestions in order. When I used the shift-F5 procedure, that did certainly speed up the refresh, but made no difference in the site data or site performance I am missing. Also clicked on the clear cache button and cleared the cache. When I got to the cookies procedure, and got to the show cookies instruction, it shows MANY cookies that I have. But not at all sure if I should delete all those cookies? I really don't see any particular cookie that may be an issue with weatherunderground though. I started Firefox in safe mode and that actually made the site perform worse? I am just not sure if the problem is THE site, or a browser problem? Unfortunately, weatherunderground is not being of much help, so I'm trying my best not to compound the problem by screwing up my browser. Oh by the way, I do get a drop down message that says " a web page is slowing down your browser" when I load the site in question. Thank you for your help, cor-el.

Could you be more specific about what is not working on the site?

The message about a site slowing down your browser usually indicates a problem with a script, but it's hard to tell whether it's one of the site's own scripts, or a third party script (e.g., an advertiser).

Hi jscher2000, I'll try and be more specific. This problem happened when the site---weatherunderground, changed their site format. And, that is why I'm suspicious the problem is maybe their problem and not a problem with my browser. The problem happened about 1 month ago, and still exists. When the site format was changed, it coincided with the longer wait time for the site to load; hence that is when I also got the drop down message "a web page is slowing down your browser". The site also has some weather data issues that it didn't have with the old format. When I contacted the site help, they seem to be rather coy about a problem. While they asked about is weatherunderground a safe site with my browser, they also didn't deny there may be a problem with them. So, there help involvement is suspect in my opinion. Nonetheless, I have tried the suggestions that were put forth, and the problem still exists. Is it strange that when I use Firefox in safe mode the problem gets definitely worse? This site, never had these issues before the change of format. But, sort of surprised being this site is a widely used site, that the problem still exists if they are to blame. Any suggestions jscher 2000?

You can remove all data stored in Firefox from a specific domain via "Forget About This Site" in the right-click context menu of an history entry ("History -> Show All History" or "View -> Sidebar -> History").

Using "Forget About This Site" will remove all data stored in Firefox from that domain like bookmarks and history and cookies and passwords and cache and exceptions, so be cautious. If you have a password or other data from that domain that you do not want to lose then make sure to backup this data or make a note.

You can't recover from this 'forget' unless you have a backup of involved files.

If you revisit a 'forgotten' website then data from that website will be saved once again.

Hi cor-el, thank you for your reply. What will this procedure (forget about this site) do to POSSIBLY remedy my specific web site issues? Is there a way to try and determine if the problem is the web site itself, or the browser, coe-el? I'm trying to avoid possibly screwing up my system, especially if the problem is the site itself. Are there any procedures you know to try and determine if the issue is the site or the browser? Thank you, cor-el.
