Why does Thunderbird 52.2.1 take forever to transmit an email with multiple recipients (i.e. more than a handful of ccs or bccs)

does your anti virus scan outgoing mail?
What does "take forever" mean. I have seen people on this forum use the term to define 10 seconds to 10 hours.
