I have Thunderbird Version 45.8.0 where after composing a message when I click Send, the message disappears nicely from the screen and the message is off.

However on the latest version 52.1.1 (32-bit) when I do the same action, Click to Send.. the message stays on the screen for a while and I have to wait for it to disappear before I can do something else.

Is this a case of different versions or is there a tweak in the new version that I can set up in order for the Send function to behave the same way as the older version?

It is getting quite annoying sitting and looking at the screen for the message to disappear after clicking Send.

Thank you for your help.

You can go to the menu Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Config Editor, filter on the pref mailnews.sendInBackground and toggle it to true. That way when you press send, the window should close immediately and the message will be sent in the background.

Thank you very, very much. This solved my problem on one of the TB's.... i.e version 52. I will do the same tweak on the other PC's and will get back to you. Why wasn't I told about this simple solution rather than go into server addresses and so on? Anyway, many thanks to you and to Matt as well. I will get back to you once the other TB's are sorted i.e. sending messages in the background. Thumbs up!

I did tell you... you replied you did not understand.

I am now desperately trying to find version 45.8.0 of TB to try it, but cant find it anywhere. It is as though Mozilla does not want us to use older versions.

That is exactly the correct assumption. The longer a software product is from release without an update, the more risk you are exposed to with regard to the software being hackable by malware. So only the most recent releases are advertised.

We have had a large contingent of windows XP folk sticking to their guns, but they have finally been hacked by an unpatched security vulnerability. The problem might not be today, it might be never. But using old software is an open invitation to trouble over time. Especially software that is exposed to the internet like mail clients and browsers.

I am guessing that you have changed the mailnews.sendInBackground preference in the config editor on one and not the other.

Thank you Matt. I do appreciate the argument of older versions vs newer versions. And, I am sure Mozilla or anyone else does not issue new versions for the fun of it. However, what no one has been able to tell me is why on one of my Four PC's, the one with version 45.8 sends the email instantly and the others, where I have the pre-latest version 52 and 45.8 it takes at least 10 seconds for the Send message to come off the screen? And, now I hear of two different Server addresses for outgoing and incoming mail: one that says imap- xxxx and the other one says something like office35.maixxxx On the ones that emails are taking about 10 seconds to disappear off the screen - be it version 45 or 52 - be it new server or old server addresses, the delay is still there.

There is no delay whatsoever when I use Outlook 2010 sending IMAP emails.

Moreover, I dont know what you mean by "I am guessing that you have changed the mailnews.sendInBackground preference in the config editor on one and not the other."

If it makes any difference, the one TB that is fast version 45 is on a Dell PC using Windows 10. All the others are on newer HP PC'S with Windows 10.

All I want to do is when after composing an email, I click Send the message disappears off my screen. With three of my other PC's, this is not the case. The message stays on for ten seconds and only then it disappears off the screen. In other words, I am staring at the screen and unable to compose the next email until one email is sent off. That is my problem. I would like all my TB's to behave the same, but they are not.

Hi Matt When you said in your original message: "I am guessing that you have changed the mailnews.sendInBackground preference in the Config Editor on one and not the other." I really didn't know what you meant there until Ekker explained step by step and only then I knew what those action stood for. In hindsight I did realise that is what you were trying to say and I also did thank you too :)
