Loaded Firefox onto my new laptop and have problems with Homepage, Font Size, New Tab, and Add-ins

I have Firefox on my old laptop which runs Windows 7. It's a Toshiba Satellite L655 - 64 bit. I like Firefox so much better than IE so, of course, I wanted it on the new-to-me laptop that I just got. It is also a Toshiba Satellite C55t-A - 64 bit which is running Windows 10. The laptop had Windows 8 when I got it and I upgraded it to Windows 10. Then I installed Firefox. Firefox seemed to install with no problems, although I notice it says it's 32 bit rather than 64 but I also saw on the internet that there really isn't a 64-bit version. I didn't do much with it right after downloading because I was anxious to get it set up. I knew I wanted to include the same Add-ins that I have on my old laptop. So I went and added 6 or 8 and then tried to do some internet searches.

Item # 1. The first thing I noticed was that when I open the homepage for Firefox the Firefox icon is gone. All I see is a blank screen with a space to enter the search criteria and at the bottom is a big menu bar showing Downloads, History, Apps, Sync, and a few other icons. And the font size on where you enter the search criteria is TINY. It is certainly disconcerting to get something that looks so different to what I'm used to. Is there a way to get the old Firefox homepage back or is it gone forever?

I went back in and disabled all the Add-ins that I had added thinking one of them might have caused the problem but that did absolutely nothing.

Item #2, The font is Comic Sans MS which I like but the size must be about a size 7. I am having to wear reading glasses to type this and I've never had to do that before. I went into the Control Panel and tried to change all the font sizes by making the font size a 12. But it didn't change anything except make the font bigger on the screen that a search brings back. But on this screen it is tiny, tiny, tiny. How do I change that to something that is readable?

Item #3. Plus I hate the screen that comes up when I open a New Tab. I don't want to see all the stuff I've done before. How can I set the New Tab so that it automatically defaults to the Firefox Homepage, hopefully the one with the Firefox icon, minus the huge menu bar at the bottom? On my other laptop, I went in and made an entry something like About:Home. Unfortunately I can't remember the exact command. I found an Add-in that said I could customize the New Tab. I installed it and then removed it because I couldn't find a way to get it to default to the Firefox Homepage.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'll try most anything once. Twice if I like it.  :-)

You can look at the Classic Theme Restorer extension to customize the appearance and restore features used in older Firefox versions.

  • You can check out the settings of the CTR extension via its Options/Preferences button on the "Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" page.
  • You can find extra toolbar buttons and more toolbar settings in Customize (3-bar Firefox menu button > Customize)

The Classic Theme Restorer extension has a setting for the about:newtab page:

  • General UI (1): New tab page (about:newtab): alternative appearance

You can look at this extension to adjust the font size in the user interface.

You can set a global Zoom that affects both the user interface and web pages (this modifies the layout.css.devPixelsPerPx pref). You can do this via the Options/Preferences of the extension (about:addons or the Tools menu).

Try to set layout.css.devPixelsPerPx to 1.0 (default is -1) on the about:config page. If necessary adjust its value in 0.1 or 0.05 steps (1.1 or 0.9) until icons or text looks right.

You can look at the Default FullZoom Level or NoSquint extension to set a default font size and page zoom on web pages.

Thanks for the suggestions. I changed the fonts by going into the Tools/Options/Preferences and am happy with those results. I also added the No Squint add-on which can be very helpful when on the internet.

I have two remaining questions. In the new 42.0 version, is there a way to get the little red-orange Firefox emblem back in the center of the screen? I know that is a silly request but I really liked that icon. Plus it's rather disconcerting to have a blank screen open with just a space to put in your search criteria and not even an indication of the where the Enter button is, just a blank square. It looks like the screen has not been programmed correctly, or was released in a half finished condition.

Question 2. How can I get the New Tab to automatically open a Homepage, hopefully one that looks complete? That option used to exist.

This last answer allowed me to include an Add-on that changed the New Tab to a Homepage screen. However, that Homepage is still blank.

I have 2 laptops, one with Windows 7 and one with Windows 10. Both have Firefox version 42.0. However, the homepage between the two laptops is very different. Is the homepage for Windows 10 blank because it was released before it was complete, or is it just not interfacing with Windows 10 correctly? Or how can I get the homepage shown in the Windows 7 screenshot?

I did reinstall Firefox thinking that perhaps it didn't install correctly the first time but the homepage is still blank. Are there settings that I could change to fix the homepage? I could not find any Add-ons that seemed to address this problem.

What search engine is selected?

You can check for problems caused by other extensions and themes.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window
