As a long-term user of Thunderbird (currently version 38.2.0 on Win7, x86 en-US), I today got (negatively) surprised by the following problem: When initiating the start of Thunderbird, the window comes up as last closed (and for a short moment I see my folders, etc., as left behind, when closing Thunderbird last), but then it turns into the "Not Responding" state (nothing is working). When looking at the Task Manager, I see that Thunderbird grabs more and more memory, before then -- after a couple of seconds -- crashing. I really hope for some quick help, if possible (I desperately need a well-working eMail solution -- ideally the one I had, i.e., Thunderbird with my settings).

What I've tried already: -- uninstall Thunderbird and install it again (didn't help) -- uninstall Thunderbird and install an older version (I tried 38.1.0, 38.0.2, and 31.8.0 -- none worked) -- starting Thunderbird in safe mode (same problem) -- starting Thunderbird in safe Windows mode (same problem) -- starting Thunderbird offline (did not help)

My main question of how to fix this, includes sub-questions like ? Should I try to delete some Thunderbird files and try again (which ones?)? ? Can I use some command line "tricks" to get Thunderbird started? Etc.

Thanks for your help!

I think that I solved my problem: Deleting the global messages DB, panacea.dat, and foldertree.json helped -- after that Thunderbird started again interactively and I can now reestablish my folders/messages data.

personally I wonder what other application is showing activity while Thunderbird tanks. Experience leaves me pointing my finger at anti virus products. Most are poorly written and prone to making an unholy mess of things when software updates. For years, every new release brought new issues with McAfee. but recently I have seen issues with Alvira and Kaspersky among others.

Restarting the operating system in safe mode with Networking will usually rule an anti virus in or out. One things for sure, you can not rely on the anti virus actually being stopped when it says it is. They often lie about that and I do not know why.

Do you use Symantec products? I hear there is a Windows update that freezes them and that would mess up anything they were working on when the freeze occurs.

Thank you, Matt, for trying to help me -- very much appreciated!

I'm using MS Security Essentials -- no other AntiVirus SW. And it does not come up in Task Monitor, when Thunderbird goes crazy (I tried again today -- Thunderbird took more than 3GB of memory (while in "Not Responding" mode), before then crashing as all the times since Friday.

Also, I did try starting Win7 in Safe Mode and then starting Thunderbird -- also this did not help.

What do you think about deleting some files that may cause Thunderbird to go wild and then trying again? Which ones would be good candidates to start with (I'd prefer to not delete everything at once, i.e., all my setup, etc., if possible)?

Many thanks for any help -- I'm still kind of desperate about this situation.
