The expanded autocomplete makes Thunderbird worthless and the recommended fix for an add on has a security certificate warning from my virus protection
The recent changes in the autocomplete function for the Thunderbird address book is totally annoying and makes Thunderbird just about useless as I keep sending emails to the wrong people. Previously I could type 2-3 letters (as in "tr) and get my friend Tracy. Now it pulls up every name/address in my address book which has the character string "tr". Why was this change made? I cannot imagine it is desirable in any instance. I have seen other posts from people with the same problem. Can it be set back to the original search rules? Please??
Thanks

Why was this change made?
the powers that be decided that it was more important to be able to search using 'contains' rather than 'begins with'.
re: the recommended fix for an add on has a security certificate warning. As you can see, the link below uses https and it also has a padlock icon, so it is okay.
I presume you are refering to 'MorefunctionsforAddressbook:
download the addon - located at the bottom of the page.
How to install Tools > Addons OR Menu icon > addons
click on gear wheel icon and select 'Install addon from file' locate the file you downloaded and click on 'Open' you will need to restart thunderbird at the prompt.
then you can make the necessary changes to force Thunderbird to use 'Begins with'.
Tools > Options > Advanced > General tab
or
Menu icon > Options > Options > Advanced > General tab
click on 'Config Editor; it will tell you to be careful :) In top search type: morecols
look for this line:
- morecols.autocomplete.match_just_beginning; false
double click on that line to toggle the 'false' to a 'true' close window - top right X click on OK to close the Options window.
