Choppy scrolling, both WXP and Ubuntu / sleepy drop-downs

I use Firefox on both my Windows XP and Ubuntu 11.04 OS's. In both v.9 and now in v.10, I can't get smooth scrolling with my MS Wireless Optical Mouse 2.0. Scrolls fine in all other app's. Problem is worst in Ubuntu, with scrolling so choppy it hurts! Also in Ubuntu, when I run the cursor over the drop-down File menus, they often don't drop down, or are very slow to do so. I like FF, but this is marring my web experience!
