Thunderbird Hangs while loading thousands of old imap messages

I'm using Thunderbird 102.6.1, Windows 10

Thunderbird proceeds to download thousands of old messages when I open it up, subsequently hanging until I force a shutdown. Here are steps I took to correct the problem: 1. Tried troubleshooting mode, didn't work 2. Looked for popstate.dat file, but couldn't find it anywhere. Maybe that's because I have IMAP set up. At this point, I'm not sure any more. 3. Followed online help pages until my head split.

How do I fix Thunderbird without opening it up?

Thanks, Evelyn

You might try going to account settings under 'synchronization&storage' and clicking option to d synchronize only a specified number of days'

The second I open Thunderbird, it starts doing its thing. So I need to fix it with Thunderbird closed. How do I do that?

IMAP accounts do not use popstate.dat, which is used for POP accounts.
