I'm using Linux Mint 18, 64 bit. I try to right-click on a link to open it in a new tab. It just doesn't work. This is Firefox 48.0, just updated.

This may be a issue with the Mint provided package of Firefox 48.0 http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?p=14677607#p14677607

This solution worked beautifully. Don't forget to re-start Firefox after the change.

You did the "Set the distribution.searchplugins.defaultLocale to en-US" fix?

Sure did, deleted the complete line, then typed in "en=US", then restarted Firefox. It's working normally now. Linux Mint 18, 64 bit.
