Why would using a Dell Inspiron 1764 17" widescreen resolution set at 1600x900 causes Firefox 4 to render webpages much smaller than IE8

Dell Inspiron 1764 17" widescreen laptop resolution 1600x900

IE8 renders all webpages just fine

but Firefox 4 renders the same pages much smaller (text and all other content) as though at a much higher resolution

Why would this happen and is there a permanent fix that would allow both browsers to render similarly?
