52ESR on Win7U/32 4GB RAM, 2.7 GHz Pentium Dual-Core E5400.

FF57 never worked out, was directed back to 52ESR. It is slow on a good day, typically with a dozen (non-dynamic content) tabs open. Eventually get the spinning-wheel-white-screen hang. Restart usually (but not always) fixes it. Had sooo much trouble today where it wouldn't show a Google maps page at all, even after a restart. In frustration I ran SeaMonkey (which I use for its Composer) and it was literally cheese and chalk, everything went full tilt - while FF52ESR was still in memory and trying to run. Sort of eliminates website and internet connection as likely causes. I also doubt it is a resources (cpu/RAM) problem as Windoze Task Manager shows 1.82GB (of 4) used, and CPU <10%.

The fact that restarts *usually* helped make me suspect a memory leak, but there's plenty there to use.

I'm at my wits' end trying to get sense/results out of FF. I do NOT like using SeaMonkey but I need to be able to move forward so I'm looking for suggestions beyond the troubleshooting tips documented here.

Without knowing what you have tried. We are bound to repeat things.

Since is not cpu multi-processor as you state please go to Options --> Privacy & Security & down to Permissions. Please ensure the box for Prevent Accessibility Services from accessing your browser is checked. Restart. Monitor

"Since is not cpu multi-processor as you state"  ?? I have described the processor as Belarc Advisor does.

Options-> Privacy gives me headings Tracking/History/Location_Bar.

Options->Security gives me headings General/Logins.

Are we even discussing the same app?

4GB RAM is not plenty.

Well if FF52ESR stalls and there is still>2GB unallocated, I'd say 4GB IS enough and NOT the cause of FF issues.

4 GB (or even 3.2 for 32-bit) should be enough, yes. SeaMonkey may perform faster in any case.

Best for you would be to try Firefox with a new profile and see how Firefox performs in order to indicate something in your current profile slows things down. You can also choose to refresh it, but that could be done later if a new profile turns out to run faster.

IF that helps, you could even consider doing the same for Firefox 57+, at least when your CPU supports it. Either way, make sure to use separate profiles for 52 ESR and 57+. I would not be surprised if you only have one profile which was used for several versions, which could have caused the issue as well as data loss (also knowing there were some file changes around 55).

Also see (the warning on) Install an older version of Firefox.

Yes, I have one profile, and AFAIK that has been the case since first installation of FF on this box.

Created a new profile. But to really see if it avoids the issues I'm having with the current config, I need to be able to replicate as far as possible the "default" version's config, including all my bookmarks. Went into default and exported bookmarks to HTML file (on desktop). Restarted in new profile and imported it but that isn't working, as in it isn't presenting those bookmarks.

Good approach. :) However, does it perform better before importing the bookmarks?

You should be able to simply copy the places.sqlite file from your old profile. See the Recovering important data from an old profile support article for more info.

For the existing profile though, did you try the Integrity check? Open about:support (or Help > Troubleshooting Information) and click Verify Integrity in the Places Database section. This applies to the same file, which could be damaged (so you would copy the culprit if that’s the case).

This is the (seemingly) relevant part of the integrity check results:

> Integrity check + The database is sane > Coherence check + The database is coherent > Orphans expiration + Database cleaned up > Vacuum Initial database size is 20480 KiB + The database has been vacuumed Final database size is 20480 KiB > Statistics Database size is 20480 KiB user_version is 35 page_size is 32768 cache_size is -2048

I have copied the places.sqlite file into the fresh profile, and starting with that shows the bookmarks have now been copied across. Other than bookmarking all the current tabs in "old" and repeating that file copy, is there an easier way to copy the OPEN TABS from default to new profile, so that swapping between profiles will be more directly comparable? (I'm trying to get to the position of being able to do almost a side-by-side comparison to see if the new profile experience is any different.)
