Update 56.0.2 erased all tabs - no session restore

more options

Found the recovery.baklz4 file that I want to use on my carbonite drive. Saved copy to desktop. Have tried placing it in profile and sessionstore backup files, to no avail. Can someone tell me where I should be dropping that file so that it opens that particular session when I start FF? That is the last file before the automatic update erased tabs and started fresh. Thanks in advance! D

You would have to place this file in the main Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed and rename the file to sessionstore.jsonlz4. That should make Firefox restore the sessionstore file.

Best is to set the startup setting:

  • Startup: "When Firefox starts":
"Show my windows and tabs from last time"

Can you explain step by step how I can recover my tabs after updating to 56.0.2?

EDIT: Found a solution. Simply restored a backup of my FF profile folder.

Did not work. I am trying to use the baklz4 file. That is the only one I was able to retrieve after the update. All of the sessionstore files and jsonlz4 had been written over. Is there any way to go back? It is very important that I get back those earlier tabs and groups. ANY help would be appreciated.

If you want to restore a .baklz4 file then you need to copy this file to the main profile folder and rename the file to sessionstore.jsonlz4 to make Firefox use this file. You can alternatively try to rename the sessionstore-backups temporarily to hide its content from Firefox. Make sure to check "History -> Restore Previous Session" and possibly "History -> Recently Closed Tabs/Windows".

As a workaround if Firefox will not accept the substitution, you can use a tool on my website to extract a list of all the URLs in the file and save that as a web page and relaunch the tabs from there.
