Thank you for your time and help. I had a folder under archives. I renamed it using capital letters. It copied it so there were now 2 files, 'PEOPLE' and 'people'. The next day it had resolved to only one. The following day it had completely disappeared. I looked on another pc and upon opening I could see it there but it disappeared as I was watching. It is not in trash. I have not deleted the file as it has all my personal emails. When I search for any email sender I know to be there it finds no match. Where has this gone to?

People ans PEOPLE ans people are all the same as far a windows is concerned.

But where in your archives did you create this folder? in the location an imap account or in a local folder?

Thank you Matt for your help, much appreciated. The folder was located in an imap account.

log in using web mail and see if the folder it there.

If so, right click the account in Thunderbird and check it is subscribed. Changing the name may mean a new folder on the server that is not subscribed. Not all operating systems are as brain dead as Windows when it comes to names.

You are a sweety Matt, thank you. I went into the web mail earlier today and it wasn't there. I did that reload profile thing but it didn't come up. Yet when I went back there after your help it was there! I did the subscribe and the folder appeared but not the contents. Almost there but not quite. How can I get it's contents?

just for now wait... it sounds to me like things got messed up and a long list of uploads and downloads is occuring.

Changing the folder name might mean that the folder is deleted on the server, Thunderbird then sends the new folder and all the mails to the server. so give it a day to catch up. You might right click the folder, select properties and then repair, just in case it missed getting an index, but otherwise if you have nothing tomorrow. post again.

Will do:) Have a wonderful day Matt.

Hi again Matt. No show today. Still only the folder but no contents. Where to from here?

lets dig deeper into 'Thunderbird's guts and see what is there we might be able to salvage.

Select troubleshooting information from the help menu. Select the show profile button. close Thunderbird. Open the imapmail folder in Explorer. open the folder for your server. you will now have to drill down through the folder to the level you would expect your people folder to allear in Thunderbird. the SDB files will take you down to the next level. Once you get to the point where you can se you people file (yes it will be a file called people with normally an MSF file of the same name. Copy that people file to your desktop. How large is it? hopefully it is large enough to hold all your mail.

I went and found it but it isn't whole. Some sub folders are missing and some empty. I have decided I have to let this go and start a new folder altogether. I can go into the webmail if I have to. I believe this happened because I was cleaning Thunderbird thoroughly, and I think I did too much at once. I will go more slowly next time. Thank you for all your help.
