I have just received an email, attached to the email is a .vcs file. This is an invite to attend a meeting.

How do I use this .vcs file?

This was answered in https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1030818. The reply there was: The first thing to try is click the hamburger (3 bar) icon, Tools/Import...Address Books...vCard file, and select the .vcf file. Open Address Book and see if the new address book looks OK. I have just verified that it works.

Hi gUSnik, thanks for the reply, but the file is a .vcs (VCS)

From what I've read I should see an question when file arrives. I then have to accept or decline the invite....

Just running some tests...

Agreed, it says .vcf, but it works for any vcard so long as it has the correct format, includng .vcs and .ics. I tested it with a .vcs file exported from Outlook and it worked.

In the absence of Outlook, try exporting a Skype address book and import it to TB.

If you look at the .vcs file with e.g. NotePad and compare it with the vcard (,vcf) format in Wikipedia you will see that they are the same.

OK I have a tablet, on Samsung Calendar I create an event in SPlanner. From that I can send an invite by going to the calendar entry, press the three dots..... then select 'Share Via'. I then select email. I enter an email address and below that is the invite.vcs file. I forward it.

At the PC end the email arrives, sure enough it has an attachment. But Thunderbird offers me nothing to do with calendar...

At this point I don't know what to do.... How do I get the appointment into Thunderbird calendar?

Regards

Further, If I use an iPad and send an invite TB finds it when received and asks me if I want to..... etc.

It's looking more like the Tab 3 is not able to do invites atendees..

ical is the default standard for inviting people to meetings, not vcs. There is an add-on that might help. But I have not used it so am only pointing you that way.

On the toolbar then  Add-ons > type vcs into the box on the right and press enter.

Use the install button

Just looking at this again. Do you have Lightning add-on installed and active? It ships with Thunderbird 38

Right, sorry for the delay. OK thanks all replies. (Matt, gUSnik) Now I have installed the vcs add-on suggested. Stranage long and drawn out, but it works as long as I am aware I have an invite in the system. YES Lightning is installed.

If the invite comes from the iPad it automatically request me to add it to the calendar.. If it comes from the Samsung device I have to fiddle about a bit .

So it's fine if an ivite arrives from the iPad owners :) Perhaps there is another different calendar software for the Samsung. Currently using sPlanner. which came with the tab 4 tablet. Not been able to find anything that would suggest an alternative method of delivery to the invitee.

Will test further.

Sussed it: iPad sends and .ics file, whereas Tab 4 sends an .vcs file. Shame they do not work the same, the iPad one is really good and integrated.

I regard that learning curve as a success and can import the Tablet ones.

Thanks all

I have filled a bug https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1201297

It will probably be duped to a preexisting one I could not find. But it would be nice to see Thunderbird Lightning actually support VCS files.

Hi Matt,

Thanks for your 'Moderator' involvement. Will have to watch for any developments by either Mozilla or Samsung.... ;)

Though my thoughts are that Mozilla might have made minor code mod, but Samsung will have to make major one.

Will someone actually contact Samsung on this?

Regards

You are Samsung's customer, so addressing their use of obsolete formats falls to you.
