imported contacts but now have lost the list of contact files

After first import of contacts, I had a panel on the left that showed the new directory plus a couple of system generated directories. I didn't get he fields correct so I deleted that file and re-imported. Somewhere along the way I changed something as the panel and the list of contact files no longer shows on the left. Nothing was showing in the contact screen, so I kept importing. I finally go a list ing on the screen, but I have 5 listing of each email and since I have no panel on the left showing these files, I cannot delete any.
