I bought a brand new laptop a few weeks ago. For some reason, Firefox is very choppy and slow, especially when I'm scrolling on websites. I noticed there are more problems when I am websites with a lot of image/video content such as Facebook. The weird thing is, when I use other browsers, it seems to work just fine (no laggy UI, no choppy scrolling).

This problem is incredibly annoying and I have been dealing with it for the last few weeks. My guess is it has to do with Windows 8.1 - I'm ready to just give up after trying all other fixes. I have even started my browser up with all Add-Ons disabled. The issue is still there. The only add-on I am running is Adblock.

Thanks.

Ok, let's try a few things here:

  • Since this is a new computer, it's possible that you don't have all Windows updates installed. Please run through Windows update a few times (remember to check the optional updates) and restart your computer until all updates have been installed.
  • New computers come with a significant amount of crap installed by the manufacturer, which can slow down your machine. I'd run http://www.pcdecrapifier.com/ and see what you can remove.
  • Remember to remove the anti-virus installed by the PC maker, and just use Window's built in anti-virus. It's good enough for everyday use and won't slow down your machine.

Thank you for your replies. When I first got the computer I uninstalled a lot of the crap that came pre-installed. I even complained to Lenovo about how ridiculous it was.

Along with that, I have made sure I did all Windows updates (including the optional ones). I am currently only running Windows antivirus.

Still no success :(

I have tried starting in safe mode. I have noticed that the browser does a little bit better, but not much. Any other ideas?

Start your Computer in safe mode with networking. Then start Firefox. Try Safe web sites. Is the problem still there?

Hello,

Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.

You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).

Then perform these steps:

  1. Open Firefox Options window (Preferences on Mac or Linux) as follows:
    • In Firefox 29.0 and above, click the menu button New Fx Menu and select Options for Windows or Preferences on Mac or Linux.
    • In Firefox 28.0 and previous versions, click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
  2. In the Firefox Options (or Preferences) window, click the Advanced tab, then select General.
  3. In the settings list, you should find the Use hardware acceleration when available checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
  4. Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.

Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:
