I am using Firefox 8.0 on Ubuntu Linux 11.10 on a laptop. Recently some sites have started loading the mobile version of web pages instead of the regular ones. How do I prevent this and get the regular web pages to load? I have tried clearing all the caches, cookies, sites visited, etc, but to no use.

Hi,

This is a problem with certain sites mis-detecting your browser. It's something that should be fixed on the server side. You can usually report the mistake using website feedback tools, but since that may or may not get the results you want, you can try an addon like User Agent Switcher: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fire.../user-agent-switcher/

It will let you change the string that gets sent to the server so you can "pretend" to be some other browser while still using Firefox. Use it with caution, though, since it could cause problems with normal sites.

Changing the user agent by removing the Ubuntu text is probably enough.

Current:

  • Mozilla/5.0 (Ubuntu; X11; Linux i686; rv:8.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/8.0

New:

  • Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:8.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/8.0
