search function
A few months ago the search feature stopped working. I used to be able to search for a message or messages by entering a search term in a search field, and/or using a filter like subject, sender, etc. But a few months ago that stopped working. Instead, there is no search field (except the general one searching for the term anywhere in the message) unless I click "quick filter", which then provides a more targeted search. But it calls up a random array of messages bearing no relationship to the search item. This is only on my MacbookAir. My iPhone also has Thunderbird but its search function seems accurate, only displaying what the search value is, except it doesn't get many when I know there are more in my inbox. My inbox is horribly overfull--I keep hoping to be able to find the ones I want to keep without deleting everything.
I checked the Thunderbird site and discovered much more complicated than the last time I looked. Right now all I want is the old one to work correctly. Thanks. Margaret Phillips

Search has remained largely unchanged for more than 10 years. SO you and I are starting with way different positions.
Search comes in three "flavours". 1. Global search (CTRL+K) Documented here https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/global-search I just checked the 2014 version of that article, which is the earliest on this site as it was migrated from mozilla support in 2014. It is almost identical. 2. Quick search (Ctrl+Shift+K) Like the global search this feature is documented https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/quick-filter-toolbar also like global search the 2014 version of the acticle appear to be largely the same as is corrently displayed. 3. search messages (ctrl+shift+F) This is Thunderbird's original search and predates global search and the quick filter. It is now the same as it was in Thunderbird versions 1 and 2
I have to wonder if you have message threading turned on and it is the root cause of your confusion. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/message-threading-thunderbird#
Margaret, which search is your problem??
I'm also experiencing the same problem. I can search for terms I know are in message headers, and get no results back. I can search for terms I know are in message text and I get nothing back. Very occasionally, I'll get matches back. But these either don't match, or are in a folder when I'm doing a folder search somewhere else. This applies to global search, folder search, quick search; basically the lot. It's only started happening in the last few updates. Basically; search is useless for me, as I've been trying to find things like orders or support replies etc. And I've had to do that by manually eyeballing the emails I have. So I've finally got around to getting annoyed about it enough to post (/add a reply) ;).
Edit: QuickFilter on a folder does work; or at least seems to. (Can I really trust that now?) When I click on the magnifying glass next to the QuickFilter field, I get the same nonsense results as doing a normal search.
Thunderbird 128.10.1esr (64-bit). Windows 10 Home, V10.0.19045 Build 19045. I'll happily supply any further info you need.
I'm also getting a new PC in a week or so, so it'll be interesting to see if a complete re-install fixes this.
